Can a Client or Patient Complaint Cost You Your Professional License?

If you’re a physician, nurse, electrician, plumber, general contractor, engineer, realtor, insurance professional, or other licensed professional, receiving a complaint against your license can feel overwhelming.

Your first thought may be:

“Am I going to lose my license?”

The good news? A complaint does not automatically mean you will lose your professional license.

However, certain conduct can put your license at serious risk—including:

⚠️ Fraud, false pretenses, or embezzlement
⚠️ Conduct that endangers the public
⚠️ Serious ethical violations
⚠️ Violating the terms of a prior consent order or agreement
⚠️ Poor or inadequate documentation that makes it difficult to defend your actions

There are several ways a professional license can be suspended or revoked, and understanding what happens after a complaint is filed can make a significant difference in how you respond.

🚨 YOU MISSED THE PERMIT. NOW YOUR LICENSE IS AT RISK?

A LICENSE REVOCATION IS NOT THE END OF THE STORY.

Receiving a childcare license revocation notice can be overwhelming, especially when your facility’s operations, employees, and the children you serve are at stake.

The important question is: What can you do after receiving that notice?

Your HVAC License Is Under Investigation—Don’t Say This

When a Board investigator contacts you, trying to be helpful can sometimes make things worse.

❌ Don’t over-explain. Explaining your entire business model—or bringing up issues the investigator never asked about—can potentially expand the scope of an investigation.

❌ Don’t treat a Board letter like a customer complaint. A casual, late, or incomplete response can create additional problems. What you put in writing becomes part of the record and may follow you throughout the disciplinary process.

In North Carolina, abandonment generally happens when a nurse accepts an assignment and then leaves without ensuring proper continuation of care. That “chain of responsibility” is what the North Carolina Board of Nursing looks at.

But refusing an assignment, declining to stay after a shift, or even a no-call, no-show is usually not treated as abandonment—because no patient assignment was ever accepted.

The real risk starts after you take responsibility. And in a staffing crisis, that line can become dangerously easy to cross.

What Can Trigger a Complaint Against a Massage Therapist in North Carolina?

A complaint to the North Carolina Board of Massage and Bodywork Therapy can involve administrative issues or more serious conduct-related concerns.

Common issues include:

🔹 License renewal or continuing education problems
🔹 Practicing at an unapproved location
🔹 Sexual misconduct or boundary violations
🔹 Negligence or fraud
🔹 Practicing outside the scope of practice

So, what happens after a complaint is filed? The Board may investigate the allegations and give the licensee an opportunity to respond. Serious cases may be referred to the North Carolina Office of Administrative Hearings.
