I am saddened to announce the sudden and unexpected loss of our partner, Stephon J. Bowens. He was a God fearing man who believed in family. He leaves behind his fiancée, Marquetta Gore, his son, Johnathan Ryan Bowens, his mother, Clavis Bowens, and a long list of family, friends, and clients. His love of family led him into a law career in public service. He was a pioneer in educational advocacy that made lasting changes to legislation in North Carolina. His work continued as the Executive Director of The North Carolina Association of Black Lawyers Land Loss Prevention Project where he continued to make monumental changes to the lives of farmers facing discrimination within the United States and across the world. When he transitioned into private practice he made a decision to show a true model of familial based legal practice and began Bowens Law Group, PLLC where my journey began with him. He then took me on as a partner and we’ve gone from Bowens & Averhart, PLLC to Wallis, Bowens, Averhart, & Associates, PLLC when Diane Wallis joined the team as a partner. We continue his legacy on in our practice with the amazing work we continue to do alongside The Land Loss Prevention Project for farmers and landowners. We are reaching out to all our clients and supportive friends during this time and will be diligent in caring for you all. Stephon will be greatly missed. A longer tribute will be available on our website. You will always be remembered here Stephon. Thank you for pouring so much passion into supporting people who need a strong legal advocate and compassionate guidance in their most vulnerable moments.
