We know the roundabout in Pinehurst is an iconic part of the Sandhills experience. But adding a new roundabout in Maggie Valley has lead at least on person to lament that the town is "officially gone."

The Maggie Valley we grew up with is officially gone, and I don’t mean that in a dramatic “somebody cue the sad fiddle” way, though honestly if there was ever a place that deserved one it’s Maggie Valley, because for a lot of us this wasn’t just the gateway to the Smokies, it was the whole vacation, the place where Ghost Town still had life on the mountain, neon motel signs buzzed along Soco Road, kids begged for putt putt and go karts every six minutes, grown men bought leather belts with their names burned into them like they were joining a group of western outlaws, and every family had at least one blurry 35 mm camera picture beside something carved out of wood, stuffed, painted, or a questionable reptile.

And now there’s a roundabout.

Right there at Soco Road and Jonathan Creek, where U.S. 19 and U.S. 276 meet, they dropped in progress with curbs, arrows, landscaping, and just enough confusion to make half of Haywood County enter it like they’re merging onto Talladega and the other half stop dead in the middle of it to let somebody from Ohio make a decision.

And maybe that’s fitting.

Because the roundabout feels like the last thread snapping between the Maggie Valley that raised us and the Maggie Valley that’s trying to figure out what it is now, because once upon a time you came through that intersection headed toward chairlifts, fudge shops, pancake houses, trout ponds, arcades, motor courts, and Ghost Town in the Sky, and now you ease into a traffic circle trying not to get sideswiped by a Subaru full of hikers who think “yield” means “trust your journey.”

It’s safer, I’m sure.

It moves traffic better, probably.

NCDOT is proud, and bless them, they should be, because nothing says mountain nostalgia quite like replacing a crossroads with a geometry lesson.

But still, it means something.

That roundabout is not what changed Maggie Valley. It’s just the thing that made it impossible to pretend it hadn’t already changed.

The old Maggie Valley was simple in the best and tackiest way possible, all neon and pancakes and souvenir tomahawks and motel pools colder than the creek, and now the road itself has joined the modern world, asking us to circle around a little before we move on.

And maybe that’s what we’re all doing anyway.

Circling what used to be.

Trying to find the right exit.

Missing a place that, for a while, felt like childhood with a mountain view.

A lawsuit challenging then-Gov. Roy Cooper's decision to keep bars closed during the COVID pandemic could move forward after a June 9 hearing. Although not an case, it does concern a different kind of taking.

Would so many homes in Rodanthe and Buxton have collapsed if North Carolina took the same approach?

South Carolina’s beaches belong to the public, and now a court has made clear that homes that migrate into public waters can be ordered removed under state law. 🌊

The Beaufort County Court of Common Pleas granted summary judgment in favor of the Harbor Island Owners Association, ordering the removal of the final house that had migrated onto the public beach and into the waters of the State.

“It's not just a nuisance, it's a danger, because it could collapse,” said Senior Managing Attorney Ben Cunningham. “Debris have come off of the house from time to time over the years, and it gets on the beach and in the ocean. It's just not really safe for the public at all.”
