Hiring a high schooler this summer? 🌞

Keep in mind, North Carolina has different labor laws depending on the age of the minor. There are restrictions on work hours, job types, and required certifications. Make sure you're following the laws that apply to each age group and understand all minors need a Youth Employment Certificate before starting work.

It’s not about whether you offer flexibility.
It’s about how you offer it.

Unstructured, inconsistent decisions are where businesses run into trouble.

Clear criteria.
Defined policies.
Consistent application.

That’s what protects you.

What starts as a communication issue can quickly become a legal issue when it looks like inconsistent treatment or a lack of accountability.

So what should you be documenting?

• Performance conversations, not just disciplinary ones
• Clear expectations and how they’re communicated
• Policies and handbook acknowledgment
• Any accommodations or deviations from standard practices

If it’s not documented, it’s difficult to defend.
If it’s not consistent, it’s difficult to justify.

North Carolina employers are required to protect workers from dangerous heat conditions.

While specific federal heat rules are still developing, current OSHA standards require employers to provide a safe working environment, including:
• Water
• Breaks
• Shade or cooling
• Proper planning for heat exposure

Employees have the right to speak up about unsafe conditions. Awareness now can prevent serious issues later. Questions? Give our office a call.

Clear criteria helps reduce bias and creates a stronger, more intentional team.

Mental health matters, and so does knowing how to respond when an employee asks for time off to address it. Whether it's anxiety, depression, or another condition, employers often wonder: Am I required to approve time off? What laws apply?

Here’s the short answer: it depends.

Requests for mental health leave may fall under FMLA (Family and Medical Leave Act), ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act), or company policy, depending on a number of factors.

Every situation is different, and how you respond matters. If you're unsure about how to navigate mental health leave requests, Executive Legal can help you stay compliant, compassionate, and protected.
