HIPAA enforcement is evolving. Is your organization prepared?

As enforcement activity continues to sharpen its focus on cybersecurity, risk analysis, and risk management, proposed changes to the HIPAA Privacy and Security Rules could significantly reshape what compliance looks like going forward.

So, what should organizations be focused on now, and what could be coming next?

In our upcoming webinar, David Senter, leader of Smith Anderson’s Data Privacy practice group, examines the latest enforcement activity, proposed regulatory changes, and the key issues organizations should be watching.

Navigating HIPAA: What’s Happening Now and What’s Coming Next will be available September 14 at 9:00 a.m.

When does a government penalty cross the constitutional line?

The U.S. Supreme Court will consider that question in Jouppi v. Alaska, a case involving the Eighth Amendment’s protection against excessive fines.

Smith Anderson attorneys Hunter Bruton and John Gibbons authored an amicus brief on behalf of UCLA School of Law Professor Beth A. Colgan, offering historical and constitutional analysis that could help shape how courts evaluate fines and forfeitures nationwide.

Law360 turned to tax partner Bill Nelson for insight on North Carolina’s new omnibus tax law and the positive changes it brings for multistate businesses, including a more uniform and simple approach to partnership audits.

Bill spoke with the publication about the state’s adoption of Multistate Tax Commission guidance designed to better align federal and state partnership audit procedures.

For multistate taxpayers, Bill said the goal is to avoid “50 different regimes” and the procedural uncertainty that could come with each state developing its own approach.

114 years of Smith Anderson and 25 years of Lorie Beam. 🎉

As we gathered to celebrate the firm’s anniversary, we also honored Lorie as she begins her retirement after 25 years of leadership, mentorship, and selfless service.

From leading IT and firmwide operations to most recently serving as Chief Administrative Officer, Lorie has touched nearly every part of Smith Anderson and left a lasting mark on the people who have had the privilege of working with her.

Our anniversary celebration is always a chance to reflect on where we’ve been, how we’ve grown, and the people who have helped shape Smith Anderson along the way. Lorie is certainly one of them.

Each year, we also mark our anniversary by gifting the firm art from a North Carolina artist. For our 114th, we acquired three pieces by Joel Hunnicutt, whose work combines the luminosity of glass and the shape of pottery with the organic medium of wood.

Please join us in celebrating another year of Smith Anderson and congratulating Lorie on an extraordinary 25 years of leadership, service, and friendship.

From construction sites to Supreme Court briefs, three Smith Anderson litigators are proving that talent doesn't wait around. Andrew Atkins, Hunter Bruton and John Harris have all landed on Benchmark Litigation's 2026 40 & Under List, a national honor reserved for the most promising litigators under 40. Andrew earns the nod for the third year running in Dispute Resolution, while John and Hunter join for the first time in Commercial.

Andrew tackles some of North Carolina's biggest construction disputes, Hunter has briefed matters before the U.S. Supreme Court, and John brings a former federal prosecutor's eye to complex investigations. Different paths, same result: three lawyers to watch.
