More than 230 hours of pro bono service. More than 180 expunction petitions reviewed and verified. A stronger, more sustainable Expungements Project for future Wake Forest Law students and clients. These are just some of the reasons Wake Forest University School of Law student Melissa Stuckey has received the 2026 Smith Anderson Pro Bono Award for Exceptional Service.

The award recognizes Melissa’s extraordinary commitment to expanding access to legal assistance for people in need. Smith Anderson partner Mike Mitchell presented the award on behalf of the firm, honoring Melissa’s work to help clients move forward from past charges and pursue new opportunities. Her leadership reflects the heart of Wake Forest Law’s Pro Bono Project and the purpose behind the Smith Anderson Office of Community Outreach, which the firm helped establish to support public service and access to justice.

Congratulations, Melissa, and thank you for showing how one student’s dedication can make a meaningful difference in the lives of so many.

The risk calculus for recipients of federal funds is changing — and organizations need to take notice.

Smith Anderson counsel Michael Anderson was recently interviewed on Federal News Network's The Federal Drive with Terry Gerton, discussing the federal government's shift away from its historically "pay-and-chase" enforcement approach to one focused on front-end reviews — scrutinizing eligibility, certifications, and compliance controls before funds are distributed.

Michael also addresses the DOJ's growing focus on data-driven investigations and what organizations should have in place to be prepared.

“If you ask your AI tool a legal question, it will give you an answer—and it may look very good—but it may be spectacularly wrong,” Smith Anderson attorney Jackson Moore noted on the GovCon Intelligence podcast.

In the episode, Jackson and host Sam Le discussed the limitations and risks of using generative AI tools by government contractors, ranging from unreliable outputs to waiver of attorney-client confidentiality to compliance concerns. They also discussed GSA’s proposed generative AI contract clause and IBM’s settlement with the Department of Justice.

From founding leadership to the next generation, Smith Anderson had a meaningful presence at the North Carolina Bar Association (NCBA)’s Zoning, Planning and Land Use Section's 20th Anniversary events.

ZPLU was founded in 2005 by retired Smith Anderson partner Lacy Reaves, whose decades of leadership helped shape land use and zoning law across NC. That legacy of leadership continued throughout this year’s anniversary events and CLE, with Catherine Hill serving as current ZPLU Section Chair and moderating a panel; Robin Tatum, who chaired the section from 2013 to 2014, participating as a panelist; Erin Catlett helping plan and lead the CLE; and Amy Crout Jones joining the incoming ZPLU Council.

It was a full-circle moment that reflects the firm’s long-standing involvement in land use and zoning and continued leadership in the field. https://www.smithlaw.com/practices/RealEstateDevelopment/land-use-zoning

At Smith Anderson, serving veterans and our military is not just part of our community work, it is part of who we are.

That commitment was on full display at the Angus Barn Pavilion, where the Veterans Life Center Salute raised more than $600,000, including matching funds, to advance VLC’s mission of serving at-risk veterans across North Carolina. Smith Anderson was honored to participate in this meaningful event that brought together clients, community leaders and advocates around a cause that matters deeply.

Richard Childress of Richard Childress Racing was recognized alongside Medal of Honor recipient Col. (Ret.) Walter Joseph Marm. Senator Thom Tillis spoke, Ambassador Jim Cain served as emcee, and North Carolina Secretary of Military and Veterans Affairs Jocelyn Mitnaul Mallette joined the Smith Anderson table with Art Pappas and others.

We’re grateful for the leadership of Smith Anderson attorneys Kirk Warner as VLC chair, Mike Mitchell as vice chair, and David Hayden, past chair, who presented Col. Marm with a special award.
