There are places in Raleigh that I have driven past for years, shown homes in, walked through with clients, and somehow I am still discovering new layers of their story.

Bloomsbury Estates is one of them. If you have ever noticed the grand brick condominium building at 710 Independence Place, near Boylan Avenue and Hargett Street, you might assume it has been standing there for a century. With its mansard roof, dormer windows, towers, slate, limestone and old-world detailing, it certainly looks the part.

But Bloomsbury Estates was actually completed in 2009. I remember walking into this building when I was fairly new to real estate and showing several of the condos. They were beautiful, unusually elegant and unlike much of what was being built in Raleigh at the time. But sales were slow. The recession certainly played a role, and downtown Raleigh was also still becoming the downtown we know today. Warehouse districts, restaurants, Union Station, apartments and all the energy we now take for granted were still evolving.

What I did not fully appreciate then was just how appropriate the name “Bloomsbury” was.

Long before Raleigh existed, this area was part of a small settlement called Bloomsbury, also known as Wake Court House. When Wake County was formed in 1771, its first courthouse, prison and stocks were located in this immediate area.

Think about that for a moment. Before Raleigh was the capital, before Fayetteville Street, before our downtown neighborhoods, people were gathering on this hill to conduct the business of a brand-new Wake County.

That history feels especially meaningful to me because the Joel Lane House sits just a short distance away. I am lucky enough to serve on its board, and Joel Lane himself was instrumental in the creation of Raleigh as North Carolina’s capital. These places are not isolated historical sites. They are pieces of the same story.

And then, more than two centuries later, someone chose to build a very high-end condominium here that deliberately looked backward architecturally.

Bloomsbury Estates was designed in a Neo-Second Empire style, with the dramatic mansard roof that gives the building so much of its personality. The interiors were equally ambitious, with extensive white oak millwork, marble, fireplaces and richly detailed common spaces. It was meant to feel substantial, elegant and permanent.

I love that. After 27 years in Raleigh, including years working in the nonprofit community before becoming a Realtor, I still get excited when I learn something that connects the Raleigh I knew, the Raleigh I know now, and the Raleigh that existed long before any of us arrived.

If you want to understand the heartbeat of Raleigh, stand on the Boylan Bridge at sunrise.

Right below us is the historic Boylan Wye—a critical railway junction that helped put our capital city on the map generations ago. Look up, and you’re tracing decades of growth: from the industrial-modern energy of The Dillon in the Warehouse District to the soaring glass spire of PNC Plaza anchoring our skyline.

That’s what makes the Triangle so special to represent. We don't just build new; we build on top of a rich history. Whether you're looking for a historic Victorian in Oakwood or a sleek modern condo overlooking these very tracks, this city masterfully blends where we've been with where we're going.

In the last few weeks of summer, it seems like some kids are in school and some are out of school, and even some are getting out of school for another break soon. You don't have to tell me that it's confusing! In my work as a Realtor I help families make sense of our public school system. I put together this little plain English version of the calendars, the types, and the choices in a blog post. I hope it's helpful.

Our daughter graduated 8th grade at the Wake Young Women's Leadership Academy (see picture from May graduation!). Our son just started at the Men's Academy as a 6th grader. Both of them attended year round Elementary school. And of course my husband and I are products of the tried and true traditional calendar from other NC counties.

Options sometimes create decision fatigue, but the choices are really nice if you are searching for a unique experience that will be valuable for your family.

Happy to be your guide.
