Never say this after a car accident: "I'm sorry, it was my fault."
It's normal to want to be polite. But those words can be used later by the other driver's insurance company to deny or lower your claim, even when the crash wasn't your fault. You may not know everything that caused the crash in the first few minutes.
What to do instead:
1. Ask "Are you okay?"
2. Call 911 if anyone is hurt
3. Take photos of both cars and the scene
4. Swap license and insurance info
5. Let the police and insurance companies decide who's at fault
