Would you tear it down, or keep it?

A family had a 1959 home on a steep lot, with an old retaining wall at the street. They needed room for three generations under one roof, including a private, single-level suite for Mom so she could move in and still have her independence.

Most people assumed the only answer was to tear it down and start over. They didn't. They kept the original foundation, opened the low, closed-off main floor into a vaulted great room, and ended up with two private bedroom suites, two home offices, and a space that flows right out to a new deck.
