Deputy Megonigle’s cosmetology students are always keeping her on her toes.
Recently, she’d been getting onto one student about driving around with no tail lights. During the conversation, the student casually admitted:
“Yeah…my headlights don’t work either. I’ve just been driving with my high beams on.” ☠️
That quickly turned into an impromptu lesson in basic car maintenance.
Deputy Megonigle helped identify which bulbs were burned out and taught the student how to replace them. A friend who had been getting rides from her even bought the replacement bulbs as a thank-you.
Problem solved, right?
Not exactly.
Two tires were also almost completely flat.
So Deputy Megonigle grabbed her portable air pump, aired the tires back up, and got the student safely back on the road with working lights and full tires.
By the end of the afternoon, the students left with a safer vehicle, a few new life skills, and probably a better understanding of why their SRO asks so many questions in the parking lot.
Sometimes being an SRO means mentoring, teaching, and helping students navigate the little things in life — even if that occasionally includes car maintenance in the school parking lot.
