Sometimes a real estate referral starts long before there is a property to see.
A few years ago, while attending a real estate conference in Toronto, I met a young investor who already owned several properties and was considering adding a U.S. investment to his portfolio.
Our conversation wasn't initially about finding an agent. It was about location. We talked through different U.S. markets and eventually narrowed the search to a city that made sense for his investment goals and, importantly, was easy for him to travel to from Canada.
Once we knew where he wanted to look, I connected him with an experienced agent in that market whom I had known for years.
That's the part of a referral I enjoy most. It isn't simply finding a name in another city. It's understanding what someone is trying to accomplish and making a thoughtful connection to the right real estate professional.
Sometimes the first step in a real estate search isn't finding the property. It's figuring out where to begin.
