“We don’t have workers’ comp insurance.” Now what?

If your Rhode Island employer says it is uninsured, have your options reviewed.

The Uninsured Protection Fund may provide weekly benefits for eligible workers, but it does not cover medical bills or loss-of-function and disfigurement benefits.

Save your pay records, employer messages and injury documentation. Get help checking coverage and identifying the proper claim process.

Hurt in a crash while making a delivery for work?

If another driver was legally responsible, you may have both a workers’ compensation claim and a separate injury claim.

But the money must be coordinated: a settlement can involve repayment to the workers’ comp insurer and affect future weekly benefits.

Before signing a release, get both claims reviewed together. Save the crash report, photographs and insurance letters.

The insurance company sent you to a doctor. Can you see what that doctor wrote?

Yes—for an employer-requested examination under Rhode Island law, you are entitled to a complete, signed copy of the report. The employer or insurer must mail it to you and your attorney when it receives the original.

Keep your appointment letter. Save the report. Review any incorrect description of your injury, symptoms or job duties with your attorney.

Not every injury shows on the outside, so a medical professional can help determine the full extent of your workplace injury, even when there are no visible signs.
