In November 2014, Margaret and Matthew were working at EMS systems and contemplating our futures. Margaret called Matt about helping her out with a potential solo practice, and over a cup of coffee they discussed a potential law firm. Everything aligned perfectly except the firm name - Margaret wanted Streger & Keavney, but Matt wanted Keavney & Streger. Matt won, but only because Margaret is the senior attorney. It is the only dispute we've ever had.

We incorporated the firm ten years ago today, December 16, 2014. A decade later, we have helped hundreds of EMS clients, from the smallest volunteer agencies to the largest health systems. We have a practice that spans the country, offers professional development and consulting services, and is connected to what EMS providers really do every day.

To our clients, and to our future clients, thank you for the past decade. We would not change a thing! Looking forward to the next ten years!

Friends and Clients:

As of January 1, the federal government is going to hit business with a massive fine if they do not file a simple form. It’s easy to fix, but it’s 100% real and it’s NOT a scam! The Corporate Transparency Act (CTA) is a federal law enacted in 2021 to combat tax fraud, money laundering, financing for terrorism, and other related crimes. It requires that businesses submit a Beneficial Ownership Information (BOI) report to the Department of Treasury Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN). This report requires details about owners of the reporting company.

The deadline for businesses that were created before January 1, 2024 is January 1, 2025. The penalties for not reporting data can reach $500 per day with a maximum penalty of $10,000.

We bring this to your attention now to avoid paying unnecessary penalties. Many non-profit EMS agencies are exempt from reporting if they are IRS 501(c) organizations. Governmental authorities and some other entities are also exempt, but there are specific requirements to meet to qualify.

Many people have active or dormant LLCs or other companies, often for private business, that need to be compliant with the BOI requirements. If you are unsure of your reporting requirements, you should immediately contact your attorney and/or accountant so that you can decide if you are required to disclose.

Go to https://www.fincen.gov/boi for more information.

Organizational leaders, take a moment and read this post about the first steps to take in crisis communication:

Kristin Golliher from WildRock Public Relations & Marketing joined me speaking at the Colorado Special Districts Conference last month and we came up with this post idea. Print it, save it, keep it handy for the day when you just might need it.

Crisis situations never strike at a convenient time. But you can expect that when they do, media will be quick to seek information depending on the nature of the crisis and the profile of your organization. If you and your team have not undergone media training, facing inquiring reporters can be int...

Announcing the first ever EMS weapons safety course - Deescalate and Render Safe (DRS)

“You respond to an unconscious opioid overdose and arrive before law enforcement. There is a large crowd surrounding the apneic patient, and as you start your treatment you notice a handgun sticking out of the patient’s waistband. What do you do?"

We often claim that safety is our first concern, and say that scene safety is the first thing we consider at every patient encounter. But what does scene safety really mean? How do you ensure that you are reasonably safe from known workplace hazards?

With the recent Supreme Court “Bruen” case, there has been a significant increase in EMS encounters with armed patients. What are you going to do under these circumstances? What happens when you do not have law enforcement to secure a weapon and you have a critical patient that needs treatment? Or an armed patient who demands treatment but refuses to disarm him or herself?

The Deescalate and Render Safe (DRS) program is the first of its kind that addresses how to handle these situations. We will cover legal issues, firearm basics, general safety rules, identifying patients with weapons, law enforcement procedures, disarming patients, securing weapons, safety and deescalation techniques, and documentation issues.

The DRS program is offered as a train-the-trainer program that includes an AGENCY-SPECIFIC license to offer the training to a single department. The program includes the slides, certificates, inert training pistol, holster, secure bag & lock, and draft policy. Upon completion, the trainers will be approved to offer the program to your agency. This program is NOT offered to individual providers.

We have four train-the-trainer classes scheduled - one each in the north, central, and south, plus as a pre-con workshop at the National Conference on EMS in Atlantic City.

For more information, or to register, please go to https://emsaegis.com/deescalate-render-safe/ Please contact us directly if you are looking for a large agency or hospital-wide license for pricing.
