Fernando here: if you've never called a lawyer after a wreck, it's normal to wonder what you're getting into. So here are the questions I'll usually ask on that first call. No trick questions, and you don't need every answer.

1. What happened, and where? The road, the intersection, the time of day.
2. Who was hurt, and have you been seen by a doctor?
3. What insurance is involved? Yours, and the other driver's if you have it.
4. Do you have the crash report number and any claim numbers?
5. Who has called you since, and what did they ask?

The call is free, it's with an attorney, and you don't have to decide anything on it. If you have a folder started, bring it. If you don't, we'll start one together.

People sometimes ask me what the first phone call is like from my side of the desk. Honestly, it usually starts with an apology. "Sorry, I don't really know why I'm calling" or "Sorry, this is probably nothing."

Nobody needs to apologize. Most people have never called a lawyer before, and there's no script for it. So I start with the easy stuff. How are you feeling. Where were you headed. Then we go one piece at a time.

The part I like most is near the end, when the questions on the other end get shorter and the voice gets calmer. It isn't that anything got solved in twenty minutes. It's that the whole thing finally has an order to it.

If you've been putting off a phone call this week, any phone call, I hope you make it. It's almost always easier than the waiting.

Saturday roundup. Here is what the week looked like on the page.

Monday we started with the sentence we hear in this office more than any other: "I don't even know where to start." Tuesday was for the business owners whose customer stopped paying. Wednesday was wrecks with a work truck or a company vehicle. Thursday was the handshake deal, and whether it still counts. Friday came back to the car. And today's tip was the hospital paperwork most families never think about until they need it.

On the posts, the week came back to one idea: where to start.

1. Three numbers for the first week after a wreck: the crash report number, the property damage claim for the car, and the injury claim. One folder for all of it, starting day one.
2. Customer won't pay? Start the folder today. The deal, every invoice and change order with dates, and every promise, including each "I'll pay you Friday."
3. A wreck with a work truck? Write down the company name on the door, the USDOT number on the cab, and the truck and trailer numbers. They are often different.
4. A verbal agreement can still be a deal in Texas. Texts after the fact, invoices, partial payments and proof the work was done all help show it.
5. Photos first, repairs second. Get the estimate in writing, ask early who pays for the rental, and keep every receipt.

Wreck update. Tips and tricks day 11: 1. Personal injury protection coverage on your policy will pay some medical providers for treatment; 2 underinsured motorist coverage will pay you from your policy if the other person's insurance does not have enough to pay you; and 3. Uninsured motorist coverage will pay you if the other person does not have insurance. 1- 3 is full coverage. Stay tuned for more.
