“I don’t want a handout.”

A man said that to me today. He’d sooner live with what was done to his family than take a check for it.

I’ve heard it before, and I’ve never once thought less of someone for saying it. Pay your own way. Don’t take what you didn’t earn. That ethic is the reason these families survived out here in the first place.

But RECA is not a handout. Nobody is giving you anything. The government ran the tests. It knew which way the wind blew. It sent men into the mines with no ventilation and no warning, and kept sending them long after it knew what the dust did to a set of lungs. Then the bill came due: in your kitchen, in a hospital room three hours from home, at a funeral you paid for yourself.

RECA is the government squaring an account it already owes. You paid in advance. You paid with your health, with your husband, with your father on a debt is not charity. It’s the debtor finally showing up.

Filing deadline: December 31, 2027. You do not need a lawyer to file. If you’re not sure whether your family qualifies, ask me. I’m happy to answer your questions even if you want to file yourself.

One year ago, RECA was reauthorized and expanded 🌱 — signed into law July 4, 2025, extending the program through 2028. My garden has grown right alongside it. What changed:

🌻 Downwinder eligibility extended to more years (1951–1962) and added Idaho, all of Utah and New Mexico as covered areas and Mohave County in Arizona

🌻 Uranium worker eligibility extended from 1971 all the way to 1990

🌻 Added core drillers and mine/mill remediation workers as eligible

🌻 Removed the age-21 requirement for leukemia claims

🌻 Added compensation for Manhattan Project waste communities and

Increased the compensation for Downwinders and Onsite Participants to $100K

Still not covered: Guam, prostate cancer, and folks who already received a prior payout. The fight for full justice isn’t over — but this is real growth.
