Why did I start The Lavender Notary? As a wife of a trans person, I see how everyday tasks become daunting hurdles filled with anxiety. From doctors appointments to passport renewals, there is a layer of worry about how my spouse will be perceived. Will people be kind? Will they dismiss me? Will they use my name and pronouns? Will I get the care or service I came for? One such experience was Dani getting a document notarized for their name change:

"After I got my name changed in December 2022, I was so excited to get my documents changed so everything said Daniel. In Spring 2023, I made an appointment to notarize my application for an amendment to my birth certificate at a retail store. Initially, the appointment went fine: the employee greeted me pleasantly and asked how I was doing. When he read over the documents, his face changed. He wasn’t pleasant anymore and didn’t look at me when he spoke. He only said the bare minimum: “License? Sign there. Okay.” He didn’t shake my hand again or say an actual goodbye. He just walked away. I left the store and sat in my car for a couple minutes before calling my wife. “Am I crazy? He notarized the document; he performed the service. Why am I so upset?” I wished he had been kinder or that I hadn’t felt so on edge after seeing his face change." ~Daniel Alexander-Burk
