Every closing has a curveball or two. What makes the difference is an attorney who stays calm and finds a fix that works for everyone at the table.

Thank you to the real estate professional who shared this kind note about Erin August from the other side of the deal.

A Montgomery County jury has returned a unanimous verdict of $451,054 in favor of our client in a dental malpractice case.

Our client was 17 when a wisdom tooth extraction went wrong. Her lingual nerve was completely severed during the procedure, resulting in permanent numbness, loss of taste, and neuropathic pain she will manage for the rest of her life.

The case was tried over eight days in the Circuit Court for Montgomery County, with SR attorney Michele Bartoli Cain representing the client. During cross-examination, Michele asked the defendant surgeon a single question about his technique. His own answer confirmed it: if the extraction had been performed the way he described, the nerve would not have been severed.

The jury deliberated briefly before returning its verdict.

Congratulations to Michele on a well-earned result.

D.C. Paid Family Leave looks different starting today.

As of October 1, 2026, the maximum benefit period for medical leave drops from 12 weeks to 10, family leave drops from 12 weeks to 6, and the maximum weekly benefit falls from $1,190 to $1,100. Parental and prenatal leave stay the same. D.C. employers also need to post the updated PFL workplace notice and review any handbooks or leave policies that describe these benefits.

Can the IRS actually put you in prison?

Nancy Kuhn breaks down when the answer is yes, what triggers criminal investigation, and why even former IRS officials aren't immune. The story she shares is a good reminder that "catching up later" isn't always an option.

Shulman Rogers family law attorney Bianca Pinnock was recently featured in The Daily Record, sharing a case that illustrates the risk of clients relying on AI over their attorney's advice.

Her client received a settlement offer Bianca believed was fair and likely better than what a court would award. The client ran the details through ChatGPT, which suggested she could get substantially more, and against Bianca's advice, countered at that higher figure. The other side rescinded its offer. The matter eventually settled the night before trial for considerably less than what had originally been on the table, with a much larger legal bill.

Bianca's position isn't that AI has no place in the process. For self-represented litigants navigating basic legal questions, she sees real potential. What she cautions against is using AI to perform legal analysis on the specific facts of a case.

The insurance company asks if they can record the call. Do you say yes?

Mike Nakamura breaks down why the answer isn't as simple as it sounds, and what insurance adjusters are actually listening for when they ask you to estimate speed, distance, or details you may not remember perfectly.

It's always better to speak with an attorney first. Watch for his full explanation.
