Estate Planning: Not Just for the Rich & Famous

With recent news surrounding celebrity estates, there has been increased conversation about wealth management and asset protection. Having an estate plan may seem like it is only for the rich, but wills, trusts, and estate plans are for individuals and families at all income levels.

It's common for even modest estates to have complexities that warrant extra measures, like incorporating a trust. A trust can provide additional benefits such as:

Increased Control: A trust allows assets to be distributed to beneficiaries at specific times or on specific schedules, instead of all at once.

Family Benefits: For families with minor children, trusts ensure your wishes are followed when it comes to who gains authority over your offspring.

Asset Protection: Certain types of trusts can help shield assets from creditors, lawsuits or any mismanagement of beneficiaries.

Privacy: A trust is typically a private document, and cannot be publicly displayed like a will can be.

Avoidance of Probate: Avoiding probate can allow a beneficiary to receive the assets much faster than going through the probate process.

Boomer parents, we need to talk.
We love you. Really, we do. But we do not want all your stuff. The bins of tangled cords. The Tupperware without lids. The wall art you “might use again.” The 47 coffee mugs you got for free with gas station points. And please stop saying, “This will all be yours someday,” like you’re bestowing family heirlooms — when it’s really 30 youth baseball jerseys, mystery tools, and plastic holiday décor from 1992.
We understand that some things are meaningful. We want the keepsakes that matter — the photos, the letters, the recipes in your handwriting. But let’s be honest: a valuable picture tucked in a cedar chest buried under old electronics might not get the attention it deserves. If it matters? Tell us now. Let us appreciate it while you’re here, while you can still share the story that makes it worth keeping.
And no, saving the chandelier from your last house “just in case someone needs it” is not helpful. That’s a Craigslist listing waiting to happen, not a legacy.
Also — and I say this lovingly — if you think this will get easier after you die, think again. Because we won’t just be grieving — we’ll be knee-deep in boxes, trying to figure out whether a random coaster was a family heirloom or just... a coaster. We’ll be guessing which stack of magazines meant something and which were just never recycled. And we’ll be silently (okay, maybe not silently) cursing every time we open a Rubbermaid tote labeled “Misc.”
Roll-off boxes are your friend. Use one. Use two.
We want to remember you through the things that matter — not drown in the ones that don’t. Help us out. Go through it. Label it. Toss what you don’t need. Let us want the things you’re passing down, not feel buried by them.
Because love isn’t in the clutter — it’s in the connection.
And nothing says love quite like a cleaned-out basement and a label maker.
With love (and aching backs),
Your kids.
