For all the advancements in car safety technology, nothing beats paying attention, driving at a reasonable rate of speed and not driving impaired. Stay Safe!

For the first time since 2007, more than 40,000 were killed in crashes last year, a safety group estimated, pointing to lax law enforcement as a factor.

5 THINGS YOU SHOULD DO IF YOU ARE IN A CAR ACCIDENT. SOME GOOD ADVICE FROM AN EXPERIENCED ATTORNEY.
1. Ensure your safety: First and foremost, remove yourself from danger.
2. Call the police: Police reports play a critical role in car accident injury claims. Police investigations can also uncover negligence and unlawful behavior by motorists and other parties.
3. Seek medical attention: It is important that you obtain a thorough medical evaluation after a car accident. Your health and well-being depend on it. Also, you will need documented evidence of your injuries.
4. Gather information: If possible, take photos of the damage to vehicles, skid marks, visibility conditions and road conditions. Collect the contact information of everyone involved in the accident, including drivers and passengers. Find out if there are eyewitnesses to the accident. If so, collect their contact information.
5. Call a lawyer: If you have suffered an injury, it is important to consult with an experienced car accident attorney before accepting a settlement offer from an insurance company. A good personal injury lawyer can help you pursue maximum compensation for your medical bills, wage loss, pain and suffering, and other hardships.

Senate Bill 411 came into effect on January 1, 2016. This new law allows you to "stack" your car insurance benefits. This mostly effects your uninsured/underinsured (UM/UIM) motorist coverage. Previous to Senate Bill 411, your UM/UIM coverage would only cover the gap between your insurance and the driver that collided with you. For example, say you have $50K UM/UIM coverage as part of your auto insurance policy. If you were to collide, pre 411, with a driver holding the minimum policy of $25,000 in coverage, your UM/UIM would max out at $25,000. Thus, bridging the gap to reach your $50k maximum.

Since 411 came into effect, in the same above scenario, you now could recover $25,000 from the adverse driver and the full $50,000 from your own insurance.

BUT... you have to either renew your policy or sign up with a new policy for 411 to effect your current coverage. Call your car insurance today and make sure you are able to take advantage of this new, consumer friendly, law.
