Senate Bill 411 came into effect on January 1, 2016. This new law allows you to "stack" your car insurance benefits. This mostly effects your uninsured/underinsured (UM/UIM) motorist coverage. Previous to Senate Bill 411, your UM/UIM coverage would only cover the gap between your insurance and the driver that collided with you. For example, say you have $50K UM/UIM coverage as part of your auto insurance policy. If you were to collide, pre 411, with a driver holding the minimum policy of $25,000 in coverage, your UM/UIM would max out at $25,000. Thus, bridging the gap to reach your $50k maximum.
Since 411 came into effect, in the same above scenario, you now could recover $25,000 from the adverse driver and the full $50,000 from your own insurance.
BUT... you have to either renew your policy or sign up with a new policy for 411 to effect your current coverage. Call your car insurance today and make sure you are able to take advantage of this new, consumer friendly, law.
