The last two days we took OTLA’s fifth Leadership Academy class to the Oregon State Capitol to meet with legislators and state-wide elected officials. They also got a tour of the Oregon Supreme Court and observed an Oregon Court of Appeals oral argument. I continue to be impressed by these up and coming leaders.

My firm is excited to welcome our summer law clerk, Katya Tkhostova. Katya is a rising 3L at Willamette University College of Law. She began her legal career journey to help reshape the legal profession and the justice system. She has always been passionate about advocacy and collaborating with like-minded individuals to create impactful, long-lasting change. Katya is interested in many areas of law, including Civil Rights, Employment, Environmental, and Transactional Law. Katya loves the Pacific Northwest and looks forward to practicing in Oregon after she graduates. In Katya's free time, she loves to garden, hike, and travel. Katya has a cat named Viola. Oregon Court of Appeals argument today in Dehart v. Tofte et al. Our amazing team of lawyers (Rian Peck, Athul Acharya, Kelly Simon, and Rachel Dallal Gale) working with Public Accountability and the ACLU represent Newberg school teachers and community members who were sued for “doxxing” by the Newberg School Board members who voted in favor of the Black Lives Matter and Pride Ban. Athul Acharya of Public Accountability handled the argument and did an excellent job.

Spent the last two days in Salem with our OTLA Leadership Academy for its lobby day and day with the courts. They got to meet with legislators to discuss important consumer protection bills, meet with state-wide elected officials including Governor Kotek, Secretary of State Fagan, Speaker Rayfield, AG Rosenblum, and BOLI Commissioner Stephenson. They also met with Chief Justice Flynn, all the judges of the Oregon Court of Appeals, observed oral argument before the Oregon Court of Appeals, followed by a Q&A, and a tour of the Supreme Court building by Judge Egan. Thanks to amazing staff for putting this all together!

Today the United States District Court of Oregon dismissed Anita Green's claim, holding that forcing the United States of America pageant system to comply with Oregon's nondiscrimination laws would violate the pageant's federal constitutional rights under the freedom of association clause of the First Amendment. We are disappointed but not defeated.

First and foremost I do this work for my clients -- clients like Anita. She is an inspiration and I am proud to be her attorney.
