The news says that we are in the middle of the Great Employee Resignation with so many employees leaving their jobs. There are many ways to retain your good employees. One thing is important is letting your employees know, no matter what their pay level, how their work contributes to the overall success and health of the company. Let them know that their work matters.

Mark Twain said that "If we were meant to talk more than listen, we would have two mouths and one ear." Listening is an important communication skill and one that is often overlooked. It's easy to look at a person when they are speaking and have your mind engaged in your own thoughts. Active listening requires you to pay attention not only to the words but body language and tone and that you remember what the person is saying and can respond.

Here's something non-COVID related for you. From SHRM magazine..." Opinions on what is considered work-appropriate clothing have shifted since the COVID-19 pandemic prompted many employees to work from home. Shorts, leggings and track suits for instance, are more acceptable."

A 2019 OfficeTeam and HR Magazine conducted surveys to identify various articles of clothing that employees considered wearing to work but were unsure as to whether they were appropriate.

Pajamas remain the least popular of the poll choices—with a 0.8 percent approval rating in 2019 and 5.5 percent in 2021. However, they saw the biggest attitude shift among respondents, racking up nearly seven times as many "yes" votes than in 2019.

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) issued guidance on May 28 that, under equal employment opportunity laws, employers may offer limited incentives to employees to be vaccinated, so long as the incentives are not coercive. But the agency cautioned that a “very large incentive” could make employees feel pressured to disclose protected medical information. And it noted that other federal, state and local laws may come into play.
The EEOC also stated that an employer can require all employees physically entering the workplace to be vaccinated for COVID-19 and states that employers need to consider reasonable accommodations for employees who do not obtain a vaccination because of disability or a sincerely held religious belief.

Every profession has its share of acronyms and the HR profession is no exception. With the pandemic and subsequent COVID related employment legislation, HR professionals have been able to add even more acronyms: ARPA, FFCRA, EPSL, EFML, PEUC,FPUC,PUA, MEUC.

I have not met any manager who loves writing and administering performance reviews, myself included. The key to easing the anxiety of the review meeting is not to have only a formal meeting with the employee once a year. Try meeting with the employee monthly or quarterly noting accomplishments and areas for improvement. Then document your meeting. At the end of the year you have your notes for writing the review. The meeting with the employee becomes easier as you've had frequent meetings throughout the year.

Being a manager is not an easy task. Here are some traits to help you be a more effective manager and develop your employees to reach their potential.
- Give positive feedback and avoid focusing only on negative issues.
- Show employees that their work matters and how it leads to the success of the company.
- Don't forget work/life balance particularly in COVID times when working parents are juggling work and engaging their children in school work and activities.
- Support employee development so that employees learn new skills which helps them excel in their careers.
- Let employees have some control over how they do their work. This provides more job satisfaction. Listen to employees' suggestions on work improvements.

Ah, it's summer and the time when employees want to head for fun in the sun when the work day is over. Many may think to skip regular work wear and just wear their beach wear to work. It will save time and be much more comfortable right? This is when managers need to set some guidance for summer wear. Here are some inappropriate work place apparel for summer:
* short shorts, other than walking shorts.
* T-shirts with inappropriate wording and/or pictures
*floppy sandals particularly in a safety sensitive area.
* Halter, midriff or tank tops
* any clothing that exposes body parts that shouldn't be seen in a workplace.

And yes, you can send an employee home to change clothes.

Do you have a bad interview story?
Your job candidate sits down, takes a family photo off your desk and deposits it into her purse. Another one slips off her shoe, pulls out some Johnson’s baby lotion and proceeds to slather it on her foot. Seriously?

Yes, seriously. Those are real stories from HR and hiring managers who replied to a CareerBuilder survey on the worst interview flubs they’ve ever witnessed.

I attended an HR meeting the other day at the local DOL office. During the meeting a mom moose and 2 calves came wandering by the window looking in. We weren't sure if they were looking for employment or had a wage dispute.

The Society for Human Resource Managment had an article about the horrors of holiday gifting. Interesting that 70% of survey respondants feel pressured into participating in gift exchanges or gifts for the boss. Here are some of my favorites stories:
•“My supervisor returned a gift because she did not want anything from me. She told me that I was not one of her favorite people.”
• One work Christmas lunch “turned out to be a staff performance review for everyone present. Comments [were] made openly that should have been kept for a private conversation.”
•At one holiday office party, the electric company arrived to shut off the electricity because the company hadn’t paid its utility bill.
