The developer behind the $1 billion makeover of Pier Sixty-Six wants to build four towers on the property, all 270 feet high. Opponents want towers no taller than the 120-foot height cap.

More new development for Flagler Village

Does Flagler Village need another apartment tower? Absolutely, says Commissioner Steve Glassman. “The younger people moving into Flagler Village love these buildings,” he says.

UPCOMING ARCHITECTURE | THE NAUTICO DISTRICT

Fort Lauderdale's New River waterfront is preparing for a major transformation.

The Nautico District, planned along approximately 6.5 acres at 413 SW 3rd Avenue, is envisioned as a new mixed-use waterfront district connecting residential living, hospitality, commercial uses and marina activity with the south side of downtown Fort Lauderdale.

Developed by Cymbal DLT, the master plan is expected to unfold across six phases from 2026 through 2032, ultimately encompassing more than 2 million gross square feet and over 1,200 residences, along with a branded hotel and an expanded waterfront marina.

The first phase, R3: The Raintree, is currently planned as a 24-story, 305-unit residential tower, with groundbreaking targeted for 2026. Subsequent phases are planned to introduce additional residential towers, branded residences, a hotel, serviced apartments and the marina.

The architecture and planning are particularly significant for Fort Lauderdale's evolving urban identity. Current developer materials credit PALMA as design architect for the district, while renderings of the broader vision are credited to Arquitectonica and PALMA.

Beyond adding towers to the skyline, Nautico represents something larger: the continued transformation of the New River waterfront into an increasingly dense, mixed-use urban environment where architecture, public realm and Fort Lauderdale's relationship with the water intersect.

With a projected buildout extending through 2032, the Nautico District could substantially reshape the southern edge of downtown and the experience of the New River.

What do you think of this vision for the future of Fort Lauderdale's waterfront?

Miami will finally surpass 1,000 feet with one of its towers

Florida is about to get its first "supertall" high-rise, and the Waldorf Astoria Residences Miami is unlike anything the state has built before. At 1,049 feet, it's 100 stories of condos starting at $3.5 million, a $668 million construction loan, and a 1,003-ton steel pendulum at the top that keeps the whole thing from swaying.

The foundation pour alone ran 32 straight hours and required 1,400 concrete trucks. Now the tower is going up one floor a week.

Would you live in a tower that moves by design?

OPINION: The continued redevelopment of Fort Lauderdale’s Pier 66 is deeply alarming to Sun Sentinel readers who are longtime city residents.

A newly completed waterfront mansion in Fort Lauderdale has set a new benchmark for Broward County's luxury market. Known as Ember House, the $55 million residence is the most expensive new home ever listed in the county. The property features roughly 15,000 square feet of living space, an eight-car gallery garage, and wellness amenities that include a sauna and cold plunge. Perhaps most notably, it is crowned by a rooftop pickleball court overlooking the Intracoastal.
