Twenty years ago, between the hours of 8:46 AM and 10:28 AM, nearly three thousand people lost their lives.

As I write this at 8:50AM, my heart aches in remembrance of that September morning.

September 11, 2001 was a day filled with the deepest of sorrow and pain. We all mourned for our country and its dead. The grief was palpable and so was the patriotism.

My youngest daughter was 12 days old. She had no way of knowing, but the world changed that morning. She has lived her life in a world that has spoken of things that were simply unimaginable the day that she was born.

There has always been a natural and gradual evolution of society. However, there was nothing natural or gradual about the shift that occurred on that infamous day.

We all made a promise to remember.

We must also remember that the death toll did not end when the day ended.

On September 11, 2001 it had been nearly 12 years since I wore the uniform of a United States Marine. I wanted badly to wear the uniform again that day.

For each person who died on September 11, 2001, there have been multiple who have died since wearing a uniform that bore the flag of the United States of America. They have died fighting battles fought with the hope that they are keeping us safe from another attack on American soil.

Not a day goes by that I don’t think about the members of our armed forces whose service was much more dangerous than mine because of 9/11. I am thankful for them and honored to call many my friends. They are too numerous to list, but they know who they are. Most of them have been able to hang up their uniforms and return to civilian life. However a few continue to place themselves in harms way. I am in awe of the sacrifices you and your families continue to make.

As I have said before, it is difficult to express the compassion, empathy, sympathy, sadness and patriotism I feel on this anniversary every year. There is no way to satisfactorily honor those who lost their lives and those who must keep living in the face of unimaginable loss.

Each person who died on September 11, 2001, and each person who has died in uniform as a result of the actions on 9/11, had family and friends who would give up everything to spend one more day with their loved one. To say the things left unsaid. To take back the unkind word. To hold a hand one more time. To ask them to stay home.

To them I promise that this day will always be a day of remembrance for me and my family.
