Put your phone down when driving! We all say it and know it but the temptation is real. Beginning tomorrow, it will be illegal in Michigan to hold and use a mobile electronic device while operating a motor vehicle. There are few exceptions. GPS may be used but only using voice commands with the phone mounted and not in the driver's hands.

The Michigan Motor Vehicle Code has been amended and drivers will face fines and community service sanctions (or both) with increasing consequences for each offense. Voice commands and hands free modes are allowed so get your phones connected to Air Play or Android Auto. Learn to use voice commands. If you can't put your phone down, put it in the glove compartment or the trunk. The following will all be prohibited while driving:
*Sending or receiving a telephone call (unless hands free)
*Sending, receiving or reading a text message
*Viewing, recording, or transmitting a video.
*Access, read, or post to a social networking site.

Fines when driving a regular motor vehicle:
*First violation: $100 fine or 16 hours of community service, or both.
*Second or subsequent violation: $250 fine or 24 hours of community service, or both.
*If 3 violations occur within a 3-year period: The driver would be ordered by the court to complete a drive-improvement course.

If a crash occurs while using a cell phone, fines are doubled.

Penalties increase for commercial vehicle drivers and bus drivers.

Feel free to call our firm with any of your legal needs, including motor vehicle offenses. Have a safe holiday weekend everyone! Make sure to spread the word about this new law.
