- SIDEWALK VENDOR ORDINANCE BEING DRAFTED, FOOD CONFISCATED - County officials drafting an ordinance regulating street vendors confiscated food from a vendor in Castro Valley.

On Thursday May 22, the food vendor at the corner of Redwood Road and Castro Valley Boulevard had their food confiscated by County Code Enforcement for not having permits to sell food.

“I understand folks are trying to make a living, but it needs to be done in the realm of public health and welfare,” said Alameda County Supervisor Nate Miley during Wednesday night's Unincorporated Services meeting hosted by Miley and fellow Supervisor Lena Tam.

The ordinance is being drafted to regulate the estimated 100 illegally operating street vendors that line sidewalks in Alameda County. It is being modeled after existing state regulations to ensure street vendors are properly permitted through Alameda County Planning and Environmental Health Departments.

A number of community members spoke during the meeting, urging the county to hire additional staff to enforce regulations during the weekend and evening.

Hayward restaurant owner Jorge Espinoza asserted brick and mortar eateries make $200 a day following the rules while the illegal street vendors can earn $2,000 a day.

Non-permitted vendors have been discussed by the Municipal Advisory Council during previous meetings and it has been expressed they want to balance safety and rule enforcement while maintaining sympathy for vendors who are often from low income or immigrant backgrounds.

“We have heard a lot of complaints on this in Castro Valley and some of the vendors have disregarded county efforts to have them cease and desist,” Miley explained.

It has not been determined how much the permits may cost per year. The County presentation indicates annual permit fees range from $50 to $412 a year in surrounding cities. The ordinance is scheduled to go before the Alameda County Board of Supervisors on July 10 for potential adoption.

Please talk to your kids about electric bikes! Most of them are not street legal.

Kids don’t often understand road laws and they don’t realize that drivers see kids on bikes and don’t calibrate for excessive speeds when they are turning.

Yesterday evening, our officers responded to a serious crash involving two teenagers riding a pocket bike (electric dirt bike), specifically, a Talaria Sting, and an SUV. The teens were traveling at approximately 30 MPH on the east sidewalk of Santa Rita Road when they collided with the SUV exiting a nearby parking lot. One of the teens suffered a laceration on his leg, and thanks to the quick actions of Officer White, a tourniquet was applied. This life-saving intervention was critical, as the teen required emergency surgery to stop the bleeding. Both teens are expected to recover.

While this incident is still under investigation, it serves as an important reminder to know and follow the rules of the road. Many pocket bikes (electric dirt bikes), like the Talaria and Surron brands, are not street legal and pose a significant safety risk. We strongly encourage everyone to review current traffic laws and e-bike regulations. If you have questions or need guidance about e-bikes, please reach out to our Traffic Unit at (925) 931-5277.

Something BIG rolled into town.

The USS Hornet Museum added a new star to its collection: an F/A-18C Hornet! This jet isn’t just any aircraft. It flew on day one of Operation Desert Storm while serving aboard the USS Saratoga (CV-60).

To ensure a smooth and safe journey, the Alameda Police Department provided the aircraft with an es**rt from the Oakland International Airport to its new home aboard the USS Hornet.

After making a grand entrance, this impressive aircraft will be an exciting new addition for museum visitors to explore. On Saturday, May 10th at 1:00 PM, visit the USS Hornet to hear firsthand stories about the skies of Desert Storm from the F/A-18C’s pilot, Captain Nicholas Mongillo!
