Form I-9 Flexibility Provisions to end July 31, 2023

Employers who hired remote employees during the pandemic and performed the I-9 verification remotely by email, fax or scan, must perform a physical inspection of the ID documents by August 30, 2023 to be in compliance with federal law.

Under California law, the only individuals who are qualified to assist with the I-9 are licensed attorneys, individuals authorized under federal law to provide immigration services, and individuals qualified and bonded as an immigration consultant under California law. (Business & Professions Code, Sections 22440, 22441).

California offers optional federal-compliant REAL ID Driver License and ID Card

Do you take domestic flights or enter secure federal facilities and/or military bases?

Effective October 1, 2020, only federally approved identification documents will be accepted for those purposes, such as a U.S. Passport, passport card, military ID or if you have one, the new REAL ID Driver License or ID Card.

If you know you will not be boarding a domestic flight or visiting secure federal facilities or military bases, you do not need a REAL ID driver license or ID card.

The CA DMV will continue to issue the non-federal compliant driver license and ID cards, and they will include a special "Federal Limits Apply" designation in the upper right hand corner.

The REAL ID Driver License and ID Card features a bear and star marking in the upper right hand corner and some extra security features.

Governor Jerry Brown has approved a 50% increase in the maximum cap of the notarial fee in California. Effective January 1, 2017, the cap will be raised from $10 to $15. This is the first increase since 1993.
