The Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh joins the community in mourning the sudden loss of Dr. Cathryn Calhoun. Her service with the Urban League Young Professionals of Greater Pittsburgh and role at the August Wilson African American Cultural Center highlighted her passion and dedication for education, arts, culture and community. May her legacy be celebrated and continued.

It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that the Urban League Young Professionals of Greater Pittsburgh mourns the passing of our former Vice President, Dr. Cathryn Calhoun.

Cathryn was more than a leader. She was a visionary, a creative spirit, a passionate advocate, and, above all, a lover of people and community. Her infectious energy, unwavering commitment to service, and ability to bring people together left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to cross her path.

Throughout her life, Cathryn dedicated herself to uplifting others and creating spaces where individuals could feel seen, heard, celebrated, and empowered.

For seven years, she served at the August Wilson African American Cultural Center, most recently as Director of Education and Community Engagement, where she helped connect communities through arts, culture, education, and meaningful experiences.

As the founder and owner of Constantly Creating, LLC, Cathryn embodied the spirit of creativity and entrepreneurship. Whether she was engaging audiences as a public speaker, inspiring others through her work, or bringing joy and movement to the community as a Zumba instructor, she poured her heart into everything she did.

Her commitment to leadership and advocacy extended across Pittsburgh. In addition to her service as Vice President of our Young Professionals chapter, Cathryn served on the City of Pittsburgh’s LGBTQ+ Commission, the Point Park University Alumni Association Board of Directors, and numerous other initiatives dedicated to strengthening our community.

This year, Cathryn celebrated another remarkable milestone, earning her Doctorate in Organizational Leadership from National University, a testament to her dedication to lifelong learning, personal growth, and excellence.

But beyond the titles, degrees, accomplishments, and accolades, Cathryn’s greatest legacy will always be the people she inspired, the relationships she built, and the love she so freely shared.

As an organization, we are deeply grateful for her leadership, friendship, service, and the foundation she helped build within the Urban League Young Professionals of Greater Pittsburgh. Her contributions will forever remain part of our story.

To Cathryn’s family, friends, colleagues, and everyone whose life she touched, we extend our deepest condolences, love, and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.

Dr. Cathryn Calhoun, thank you for leading, creating, inspiring, and reminding us of the power of community. Your light, your laughter, and your legacy will never be forgotten.

Rest peacefully, Dr. Calhoun. Your impact lives on.

Thank you to everyone who joined us last night for the Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh's 2026 Annual Meeting. It was an uplifting event as our President & CEO Jennifer Thompkins noted, "the Urban League cannot be muted when it comes to fighting for our communities."

Thank you to Carlow University and President Dr. Kathy Humphrey for hosting us for the evening in their beautiful space. We also appreciate Mayor Corey O'Connor for attending and sharing his vision for the community. Additional thanks to our dedicated Board of Directors who help elevate our work and mission. Thank you also to Board First Vice Chair Sara Oliver-Carter for chairing the meeting, and of course our hard-working staff that goes the extra mile to empower communities and change lives.

⚖️ Thurgood Marshall made history on this date in 1967 when he was sworn in as the first Black U.S. Supreme Court Justice.

But his legacy started long before he put on the robe. As a civil rights attorney, Marshall helped build the legal strategy behind Brown v. Board of Education, the landmark case that challenged segregation in public schools. He also fought discrimination in voting, employment, and criminal law because he knew that constitutional rights mean little if they aren't protected in practice.

Decades later, his legacy still shapes the fight for equal justice today and inspires new generations of legal advocates.
