According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), most of those who are killed or seriously injured in accidents involving large trucks are the occupants of passenger vehicles. There are a variety of ways these accidents occur, including:
Jackknifing
This is where a truck basically folds in on itself, and happens when the driver loses control of the cab and the trailer due to speeding and/or having to brake suddenly. This, in turn, creates a situation where the trailer can swing to the other side of the road and into the path of oncoming vehicles.
Rollover Accidents
These horrific accidents can be fatal for everyone involved, including the driver of the truck. These usually happen when a tractor-trailer approaches a curve at too great a speed. The problem is that when the driver suddenly changes direction, the trailer can continue in the original direction and pull the truck with it, causing a rollover. Another cause of these accidents is mechanical failure or tire blowouts.
Underride Accidents
When a car crashes into a truck and becomes trapped under the trailer it is known as an "underride accident." The biggest risk is seen where the roof of the car is sheared off, which often results in fatal consequences for all of the occupants of the car. Even those that do survive an underride accident can have severe and disabling injuries which may be lifelong.
Rear-End Accidents
These are not very exciting accidents, and typically involve only minor injuries, especially when they occur at low speed. However, due to the size differential between the vehicles, tragic consequences can also result from such situations. These accidents typically involve truck-driver distraction, impairment, speeding, or reckless driving.
Truck accidents can be complicated and involve numerous different parties, including the driver, trucking company, maintenance company, manufacturer and others. If you're injured in a truck accident, you need attorneys on your side who can review the case properly and will fight for the compensation you deserve.
