Why can cancer be missed or diagnosed late?

Early cancer symptoms can sometimes look like much more common conditions.

The first explanation is not always the problem.

The bigger concern is what happens when the same symptoms keep coming back and nobody looks deeper.

If you have returned multiple times with the same complaint and the original explanation no longer fits, that is when more questions may need to be asked.

Before surgery, ask your surgeon what recovery actually looks like.

How long until you can drive? Go back to work? Exercise again? And what symptoms should make you concerned?

The operation may only take a few hours. The recovery can last for months, so make sure you know what to expect before you leave the hospital.

Before agreeing to surgery, ask: is there a less invasive option?

The recommendation you receive can sometimes depend on which specialist you see. In some cases, a smaller procedure, injections, therapy, or another approach may be worth discussing.
And if a less invasive option is not appropriate, ask your surgeon why.

If your doctor seems rushed or brushes off your concerns, do these 2 things.

Ask what else your symptoms could be, and ask for your concern to be documented in your chart.
Sometimes the first explanation is right. Sometimes it is not. Having the conversation and creating a clear record can matter.

She went in for knee surgery and reportedly came out paralyzed.

The surgery itself went fine. The reported error happened when potassium was injected into her spine instead of anesthetic.

This is the type of catastrophic, preventable mistake patient safety professionals call a “never event.” Hospitals use multiple safeguards to prevent medication mix-ups like this, and when one happens, families deserve answers about how those systems failed.
