Here’s a question from one of our readers:

My husband was recently diagnosed with dementia and while we are still able to live at home, my duties as a caregiver continue to increase monthly and I am concerned that if he does need nursing home care I will lose all of our savings. We have already moved all of our financial assets and our home title into my name alone. What else should we be doing to prepare for the future and his increasing care needs?

Unfortunately, Pennsylvania is one of only a handful of states that still imposes an inheritance tax on all assets except life insurance at the death of the Pennsylvania resident. So, even if the heirs live outside PA, the assets owned at death are taxed.

Here’s a question from one of our readers: I’m recently retired in my early 70’s and my spouse and I primarily have Individual Retirement Accounts for our nest egg in addition to our home. We are concerned about the exposure of our IRA’s to long term care costs as well as the eventual income taxes our children will pay when they inherit our IRA’s. We can’t put our IRA’s in a protective trust so how do we protect them?

My current marriage is pending divorce. I have no Will. Do the children from my first marriage have any rights to my estate?
