Justice Through Community.

On September 11, 2001, people stepped forward however they could.

Firefighters ran toward the towers. Doctors and nurses prepared for the wounded. Ordinary people helped strangers through the streets.

Just blocks from Ground Zero, attorney David B. Golomb recalled his trial lawyers’ association sheltering people escaping the disaster. Stephan H. Peskin, who witnessed the second plane strike, was among the lawyers whose experience that day would help inspire service afterward.

In a moment of unimaginable loss, community meant using whatever you had to help the person next to you.

Strength Through Advocacy.

In the days that followed, lawyers turned that same spirit into action.

Attorneys including Leo V. Boyle, Larry S. Stewart, Richard A. Bieder, Hugh W. Campbell, Linda Lipsen, and many others helped organize the legal response that became Trial Lawyers Care.

Nearly 1,100 lawyers donated almost 900,000 hours, representing victims and families without charging them a fee—helping with compensation claims, estates, benefits, family matters, and the countless legal problems created overnight by tragedy.

They could not undo what happened.

But they could stand beside the people left to rebuild.

That is Justice Through Community.

That is Strength Through Advocacy.

Twenty-five years later, we remember those we lost, those who ran toward danger, and those who answered the call to serve.

JUROR ALLEGEDLY SMOKES W**D DURING ALLEGHENY COUNTY HOMICIDE TRIAL, FORCING MISTRIAL

An Allegheny County homicide trial was abruptly thrown out Tuesday after someone allegedly smoked or vaped ma*****na inside the jury room, and not one juror admitted to doing it.

Safon Gump, 25, of East Liberty, was on trial for homicide when the bizarre situation unfolded during the jury’s lunch break.

A court employee went into the jury room to release jurors for lunch and was immediately hit with the smell of ma*****na. One juror reportedly looked at him and said, “It wasn’t me.”

When court resumed, Judge Edward J. Borkowski questioned all 12 jurors and two alternates individually.

Each was asked whether they had used or consumed anything legally or illegally inside the jury room.

Every one of them denied it.

One juror said the ma*****na smell appeared to be coming from the men’s bathroom, but no one could identify who was responsible.

Defense attorney Owen Seman said the issue wasn’t necessarily whether someone legally used medical ma*****na. The bigger problem was that someone appeared to be lying while serving on a jury responsible for deciding a homicide case.

“I can’t in good conscience move forward in a homicide trial where my client’s life is on the line … and somebody’s not being truthful,” Seman said.

Seman ultimately requested a mistrial.

No charges were filed over the incident, and the Allegheny County Sheriff’s Office was not asked to investigate.

Gump’s trial has been rescheduled for March.
