Outstanding!

Hey!

I guess you’ve been in suspense about how our 7th Grey Matters 5K/10K did. We did VERY well.

$9600 went to I CAN Svcs., Inc. and $9600 went to the American Brain Tumor Association!

That’s the most we have given EVER to each organization! Let’s see if we can get $10,000 next year!

Congratulations! 🎉🩶

Best wishes to Rhealyn Moore as she heads off for college. Rhealyn did a fantastic job working as my legal secretary this summer. It didn’t take long for her to grasp complex legal issues and learn how to effectively write and file motions and briefs. She will make a great lawyer someday and might put me out of business!

Rhealyn is a graduate of Paintsville High School and is first cousins with former UK and Rowan County star pitcher Mason Moore. Rhealyn was the star working for my office this summer and will be missed. Best of luck at Transy, Rhealyn!

This Fourth of July I’m thankful for veterans like my neighbor, Mike Middono.

Unfortunately, some unscrupulous organizations try to take advantage of our great veterans. Mike recently received multiple letters threatening legal action if he did not pay a large sum in fees he allegedly owed to a jail.

Earlier this year, Mike suffered a health episode in his car, which led to being arrested and charged with DUI. The charges were promptly dismissed when a blood test proved he had no intoxicants in his system. Still, the jail where Mike was lodged started harassing him to pay fees for his time there. Apparently this jail is unaware of - or worse, indifferent to - the 2021 Kentucky Supreme Court decision of Jones v. Clark County in which the justices unanimously ruled jails cannot force inmates to pay for confinement if their charges are dropped.

This particular jail will soon receive a letter from my office reminding them of the law and demanding they cease badgering Mike and issue him a written apology. I am more optimistic about the first request being fulfilled than the second.

God bless Mike and all our wonderful veterans. If any vet finds themselves in the same situation, call my office and I will help you free of charge.

Update to previous post: Our sponsorship of Johnson County Little League of course includes softball!

Pictured is gold glove infielder Lily Wilson showing off her scrape from a benches-clearing brawl in the third inning of tonight’s game.

Proud to sponsor Johnson County Little League. Name was *just* barely short enough to fit on the jerseys 👌⚾️

Looking forward to another year of running in the Grey Matters 5K. Brandon Robinson is a dear friend who has been more like a brother to me for 12 years. Brandon and Stephanie refuse to let his own health struggles slow down their charitable efforts. Grey Matters Whitesburg, Inc. is the first organization my law office sponsored, and we will continue to support it every year. Come join us in Whitesburg next Saturday!

Hey friends!

We officially have entered , so there 10 DAYS LEFT UNTIL RACE DAY! Remember, online registration cuts off May 8th. Link: https://runsignup.com/Race/KY/Whitesburg/GreyMatters5K

There will also be on site registration starting at 7 a.m. on Saturday, May 11th at the Letcher County Veterans Museum. We take cash or card if you want to wait until race day to sign up.

Now, as we often do, we feature our first story: Mine.

I won’t bore you with my first two surgeries, because that’s what got all this started, but I instead focus on the third.

On December 8th, 2023, I signed off from WYMT thinking it was going to take about two weeks to heal up. Here we are six months later.

I had a mostly awake craniotomy on December 13th. Everything was going good until suddenly I lost feeling in my right hand. I told the doctor, who immediately stopped. Thankfully, he had got all the tumor that was visible, but told Steph and my friend Keela that I was at the end of my surgical options.

I was told in two months I would regain the use of my hand. Ok, no big deal right?

It was a little bit later once the anesthesia wore off that something else was wrong. I was diagnosed with expressive aphasia. That means I’m in here, but I get my words jumbled a little bit and I have to focus on what I’m saying before I can get my point across. My speech therapist Savannah says I’m improving. 😁

I was making steady progress with my hand until one night I had a focal seizure involving my right arm. I was back to square one. With the help of Ryan, my occupational therapist, I’m regaining what I lost.

That brings me to now. I’m doing a lot better than someone who’s has his head cut open three times has a right to be. Sure, I have my down days, but I remember I’m lucky to be alive. I give all the credit to God and thank Him daily for his blessings.

There’s a reason I’m still here. I believe it’s to spread awareness to this awful disease that has plagued so many of us. That’s why we . 🩶🧠
