We’re in Montana this Memorial Day weekend, and today our family stopped at a small chapel built to honor soldiers from the 163rd Infantry who gave their lives during World War II.

Standing there reading the names, I was reminded that freedom has always come at a cost paid by others.

Memorial Day is more than a long weekend. It is a day to remember the men and women who never made it home and the families who carried that sacrifice forward.

Grateful today for those who gave everything for our country.

Proud to support the Drive Fore Meals on Wheels Golf Classic today.

Meals on Wheels does far more than deliver food. For many seniors, that visit may be the only personal interaction they have all day. It brings dignity, encouragement, safety, and a reminder that someone cares.

As I’ve worked with families through estate planning, one thing becomes very clear: how we care for people in the later stages of life says a lot about a community.

Grateful for the work they do every single day here in Montgomery.

A few weeks ago, I sat with a couple who had been meaning to do this for years.

Nothing was wrong.
That was the problem.

No urgency. No deadline. Just… later.

At one point, he smiled and said,
“We kept waiting for the right time.”

Cinco de Mayo is often seen as a celebration.
But at its core, it marks a moment when people chose to act instead of wait.

That’s usually how this works too.

Most families don’t need more information.
They just need a moment where they decide it’s time.

Maybe today is that moment.

Upside Down

Life can turn upside down in a moment.

A diagnosis.
A phone call.
A loss you didn’t see coming.

And suddenly… decisions have to be made.

Most families aren’t ready.
Not because they don’t care.
They just never got around to it.

A simple plan brings clarity when everything feels uncertain.

You don’t build it because life is upside down.
You build it so your family has something steady when it is.

If you’ve been putting it off, this is your nudge.

“Nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.”
— Benjamin Franklin

Today is tax day, so most people are thinking about the second one.

But the first one is actually the reason estate planning exists.

A good estate plan makes things clear for the people you love. It keeps your family from having to sort through complicated decisions during a difficult time. And most importantly, it gives you the peace of mind that things are handled the way you want.

The good news is that estate planning does not have to be complicated. In many cases, simpler really is better.

If you have been meaning to get your plan in place or update an old one, today is a pretty good reminder.

Pike Road Law helps families create clear plans that protect what matters most.

Tomorrow is Good Friday.

It is a day that many take to pause, reflect, and remember the sacrifice that sits at the center of the Easter story.

In observance of Good Friday, our office will be closed tomorrow.

We will reopen on Monday and look forward to serving you then.

Wishing you and your family a meaningful Easter weekend.

Tomorrow is April Fools’ Day.

A day for jokes, pranks, and surprises.

But when it comes to your family and your estate plan, surprises are the last thing you want.

One of the most common things I hear is
“I know I need to get my estate plan done.”

Then life gets busy and it gets pushed off another year.

Unfortunately, when there is no plan in place, the law creates one for you. And it rarely reflects exactly what families would have chosen.

No tricks.
No surprises.
Just a clear plan for the people you love.

If getting your estate plan in place has been on your list, I would be glad to help you take the first step.

During a recent estate planning conversation, we took an unexpected detour… into Venmo balances.

One spouse mentioned keeping a pretty healthy amount there. The other looked genuinely surprised. Apparently this is more common than you might think.

We all laughed, but it raised a real question.

What actually happens to those accounts if something happens to you?

Venmo, PayPal, online apps, rewards points, and digital wallets do not automatically sort themselves out. If no one knows they exist or has authority to access them, families can spend months trying to track things down.

Estate planning is not just houses and investment accounts anymore. Sometimes it is knowing where the hidden money lives.

Moral of the story: your estate plan should include the accounts your spouse may not even know about.

Most people think flying starts when the wheels leave the ground. The truth is the most important decisions happen long before takeoff.

I am planning a flight to Texas this week and have spent more time studying weather charts than anything else. Right now a high pressure system over northern Mexico is pushing against a front across North Texas. If it moves north, the trip is smooth. If not, conditions tighten quickly for a VFR pilot like me.

Same airplane. Same plan. Different outcome depending on conditions you cannot control.

Estate planning feels a lot like that.

Families often come in thinking planning is about documents. Wills, trusts, and powers of attorney certainly matter, but the real work happens earlier. It is thinking through responsibility. Who steps in if something happens. How decisions get made. How the people you love are protected when life changes unexpectedly.

Good planning is stewardship. It is not about predicting the future perfectly. It is about preparing wisely so your family is not left trying to make hard decisions during a difficult moment.

Long before the moment arrives, preparation is what gives families peace of mind.

What is one decision you are glad you made early that protected your family later?
