Doctors need informed consent before treatment. If you're incapacitated, Arizona has a default decision-maker statute that sets out who can decide, and whether a spouse is first can depend on things like separation status.

Your photos, your social media accounts, the business tied to them. Who can access them if something happens to you?

A lot of my clients have digital assets with real value, especially when a business is connected to them.

Don't rely only on your trust or financial power of attorney to take control of these. Many of these accounts let you name a specific backup person who can access them if something happens.

I used to think I had to know every answer.

Early in your legal career, the message is that you should spot every issue and solve every problem on the spot. If you can't, you're not good at what you do.

After 16 years of practice, I see it differently. It's okay to take a few minutes to think. It's okay to follow up with something I should have mentioned. And it's okay to call a trusted professional in a complementary area and bounce it off them.

Knowing what I know well, and knowing when to bring someone in, is part of doing this job.

Doing business in more than one state? Your LLC probably needs to be registered in each one, not just where you formed it.

This doesn't create a new LLC. Your existing business gets registered as a foreign entity in the new state.

It usually costs less than forming the LLC in the first place, and most states let you do it online.

Save this if your business is growing past state lines.

Married? Don't assume everything automatically goes to your spouse.

Plenty of couples still hold separate assets, sometimes on purpose, sometimes because they just haven't combined them yet.

I also see beneficiary designations that never got updated after the wedding, so an old beneficiary is still listed. And in blended families, there may be a real intention for someone other than the spouse to receive certain assets.

That's why every plan starts with a full inventory, then gets designed around where you want each asset to go.

Save this and go check your beneficiaries.
