This policy is both cruel and profoundly irrational.
Suspending immigrant visa processing for 75 countries does nothing to enhance public safety or improve the integrity of our immigration system. What it does accomplish is the mass separation of families who have already waited years—sometimes decades—while following the rules, paying fees, attending interviews, and complying with every requirement imposed on them.
These are spouses waiting to reunite with their husbands or wives. Parents separated from their children. U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents left in legal limbo, powerless to bring their loved ones home—not because of any individualized concern, but because of where those loved ones were born.
Immigration law is already complex, slow, and emotionally devastating for many families. A blanket suspension like this ignores real lives, real equities, and real harm. It replaces individualized adjudication with political theater, and families are the collateral damage.
The suspension specifically applies to U.S. immigrant visas for foreigners seeking to live in the United States but not to short-term visa applicants such as tourists or students.
