I've been telling my clients for the past several years that purchasing insurance through State Farm is a bad idea and that if you ever have to pursue a claim against your own insurance policy (uninsured or underinsured motorist claim), or if someone else is asserting a claim against your policy, you are going to end up in court because State Farm was going to INTENTIONALLY mishandle the claim. Reporting a motor vehicle collision to the police department is something that we all take for granted. Seeking the assistance of the police department ensures that a collision is properly documented, fault for the crash is investigated, and that the individuals involved in the crash obtain the information needed to pursue any claims for damages arising from the crash (identify drivers, insurance, etc. . . ). Sadly, a recent trend may make the decision to report a crash significantly more difficult for a portion of our community. If you are concerned at all about involving the police department, make sure that you properly document on your own the following information: 1) Full name, date of birth, address of the other driver; 2) name of the automobile insurance carrier and policy number for the other driver; 3) photographs of both vehicles BEFORE they are moved by either party; 4) photographs of other driver's driver's license and the vehicle's license plate; and, 5) names and phone numbers of any witnesses to the crash.

A woman last month flagged down a Houston police officer to tell them about a car crash on Washington Avenue. The officer responded by calling federal immigration authorities on her. While ICE agents didn't respond and detain her, as they have in some similar instances, her story is one of at least....
