930 W Moreland — F.Q. Story, sold 2022
Look up at this house and you'll see a copper chimney shroud with agave leaves cut into it. It's not stock. John Henry Pierce, a metalworker who lived in the neighborhood, made pieces like this all over F.Q. Story — chimney caps, gates, garage details. He's gone now, but his work is still up there on rooflines across the district, quietly, where most people never look.
The owners bought in 1998, eight years after I-10 finally opened through central Phoenix. That freeway took two decades to build and took a lot of houses with it. Buying here in '98 meant believing the neighborhood was coming back. They were right.
Twenty-four years later, they were ready to retire to the Great Lakes. They interviewed a few agents and hired me. Three days on market, $10,000 over asking. They left on a high note.
This is why I work in the historic districts. The houses are full of things somebody made by hand, and the people in them usually have a reason for being there.
