It's closing day!

This former neighborhood grocery market just east of the Coronado Historic District sold to new owners eager to continue its transformation into a house. Watch for an exciting rehabilitation that showcases the potential of the building and will add to the uniqueness of a neighborhood which has been "on the rise" for several years.

This is an impending loss....1964, from the form of Haver. Iconic form that was the entrance to Polynesian Paradise. But it will go down on Monday 9-10-18....so the motorcycle shop can expand. Unfortunate.

It is only fitting that the opening event for the Phoenix celebration of National Historic Preservation Month is at the Rosson House, the Queen Anne mansion in downtown from 1895. The event also showcased the 48 other properties that survive from the 19th Century in Phoenix.

Windsor Square Home Tour day. Windsor has a unique history. It was conceived in 1928 to be a development of Tudor Revival and Spanish Colonial houses in a subdivision far north of the city at the time. About 20 homes were built before the crash of '29 stopped all construction. The next real boom did not occur until the late 40s. So there is a very interesting mix of later styles Deco, International, and Moderne.

On the day of the Coronado Neighborhood Home tour, I thought it worth giving a shout out to Coronado and all the effort to host a major event. Coronado has lots of Bungalows, but the "Southwest Style" which blends Spansih Colonial and Pueblo with many variations is also prevalent, and is prevalent on some blocks. The following is a mix of several houses from ca. 1925, on the block just north of where the street car ended at 10th and Sheridan.

We lost this one today. The Neal House, at 1st Street and Willetta. Designed by Lescher and Mahoney, 1921, Period Cottage. The Phoenix HPC capitulated to the developer, and despite an attempt to move and salvage, the developer still won...They SHOULD have been told to save it, or should have had the foresight and repect for cultural heritage and worked the development plan around it, but no, the land value won again.
This loss is particularly egregious because within the last year, on this same block we lost the Medical Arts Building, and a mid century Valley National Bank Building.
