Important update on Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Ukrainians:
With the October 19, 2026 deadline fast approaching, many concerned Ukrainians have been reaching out about the status of their TPS. Here is a breakdown of where things currently stand:
What We Know:
- The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) did not issue a statement or decision regarding an extension by the August 20, 2026 deadline (which was 60 days prior to the expiration date).
- Because no decision was made by that date, TPS is automatically extended by operation of law for an additional 6 months.
- The new expiration date for TPS is April 19, 2027.4
- Ukrainians do not need to worry about having to leave the United States before October 19th due to this automatic extension.
What We Don’t Know Yet:
- It remains unclear whether work permits (EADs) for TPS holders will be extended.6
- It is still unknown if work permit extensions will happen automatically, if a new application will be required, or if work permit extensions will even be offered.
Further news and guidance regarding work permits are expected in the coming days or weeks. Stay tuned for updates!
