The Trump administration has dropped its appeal after child patients from UPMC’s gender-affirming care clinic and their families - represented by Public Interest Law Center and Ballard Spahr - successfully quashed a subpoena from the Department of Justice seeking their personal healthcare records.

These young people and families never should have been put through the anguish and fear they faced from the federal government.

We know the broader context: Healthcare providers around the country have been caving to the administration’s demands and agreeing to end gender-affirming care and even create “de-transition” clinics. Gender-affirming care is legal in Pennsylvania; gender-based discrimination is not. UPMC must follow the law and not cave to a hostile administration.

This year, the recipients of our Thaddeus Stevens Award are our anonymous young clients and their parents, who are courageously standing up to oppose the federal government’s demand for their private medical records, and Ballard Spahr, our pro bono co-counsel in this important fight.

When the Department of Justice issued broad subpoenas seeking the deeply personal medical records of young people who had received gender-affirming care, these families made the extraordinary decision to challenge the government’s demands in court. Together, we won landmark court victories preventing the government from obtaining these records. These honorees embody the courage, resilience, and pursuit of justice that the Thaddeus Stevens Award recognizes.
