Is your child leaving for college soon? If they are over 18, you will not be able to act on their behalf with their school or banking unless you have a power of attorney. We have young adult powers of attorney that anticipate issues that may come up if your child is injured or otherwise unable to act for themselves. Give us a call at (231) 622-8486 to get the peace of mind that advance planning can provide.

As of April 3, 2024, the office is back open! Thank you to all of the linemen and first responders who got our power and services back in what was, honestly, a remarkably short time considering the damage they were dealing with. You can reach us at (231) 622-8486,

The office will be closed today as we make our move to our new space in the Danser Professional Building. We’ll see you Monday when we open in our new office.

On the Move! On October 13, we will be moving from our current office space at 2230 E. Mitchell St. to our new space in the Danser Professional Building at 308 State St. The Danser Building is the building next to the Post Office where the Social Security office is located. This move gets us back downtown Petoskey to space that has plenty of available parking, and is on the main floor with barrier free entry. We will be occupying a temporary suite until early next year when the build out of our permanent space is expected to be complete. We are excited about this move and believe that our clients will enjoy this new space as well.

Do you have a son or daughter leaving for college in a few weeks? There is a lot to do and get organized, but make sure that you have their legal documents in order as well. If your student is 18, you have no authority to get information from the school regarding academic performance, class schedules, or to get access to their dorm room. You also would not have the ability to talk with any health care providers should your student get sick or injured while away at school. These situations can be resolved by having your student sign a Durable Financial Power of Attorney and a Patient Advocate Designation. The Durable Financial Power of Attorney should be custom crafted for a college student in order to grant the specific powers that you would need to have access to not only financial information (think student loans), but also their academic records and the ability to discuss them with school officials. It also needs to allow for addressing housing contracts or leases and access to the student's living space.

At Stroup Meengs, we have documents that are custom crafted to the needs of parents with a student away at school. There is still time to get these documents prepared before the start of school. Give us a call today and let us help you cross that item of the preparation for college checklist.
