Paralegal

Raff Law, APC is looking to hire a Paralegal for our growing practice in the heart of downtown Petaluma. The benefits of the position include the following:
1. Unlimited vacation time;

4. In addition to fixed compensation, we provide discretionary payouts to staff depending on year-end evaluations and the profitability of the firm. The primary attributes we are looking for are whether the candidate:
a) Is organized and can complete assignments on time without frequent reminders about what needs to be completed;
b) Is a fast learner, but is also not afraid to ask questions if they need help;
c) Fits well with our existing team; and
d) Is very detail oriented, maybe driving your family and friends crazy with your need to arrange things in a very organized way or correct their grammar; and
e) Applicants must qualify as a paralegal according to California Business and Professions Code ยง 6450(c).

While we are primarily concerned with the skills above, a perfect candidate will also have experience:

a) Preparing pleadings and other court forms;
b) Assisting attorneys with discovery requests and motions;
c) Managing trial preparation including: coordination of witnesses and travel, trial exhibits, charts, trial notebook, subpoenas, and page lines;
d) Communicationing with clients, experts, and attorneys about cases; and;
e) Reviewing contracts, preparing estate documents or probating estates in court; and
f) Preparing corporate documents for small businesses.

This is a salaried position with a range of $70,000 to $95,000 DOE, starting with a 90 day training and evaluation period.

Raff Law, APC is looking to hire attorneys for our growing practice. New attorneys are welcome to apply. This ad is for a junior associate position, though we are also looking for a senior associate, and we have a separate ad posted for that.

We are a close-knit firm with four other attorneys and support staff in the heart of downtown Petaluma. We offer our attorneys the opportunity to make good money, have a work-life balance, and get substantive experience with civil litigation, all while working with colleagues who have a good sense of humor and often joke around with each other in a respectful and supportive environment. We can accommodate remote or in-office work based on your preferences. We value employee satisfaction, so we will do our best to accommodate any needs or desires that you have for the position.

The benefits of the position include the following:
1. No billable hour requirements;
2. Unlimited vacation time;
3. Base salary plus fixed bonuses for production and case origination;
- Under our formula, 1,500 hours of billable work in a year would earn you $162,855;
- If you also originated those cases you would make $310,905;
- These amounts increase significantly once you are trained and able to handle cases with less supervision;

5. In addition to fixed compensation, we provide discretionary payouts to staff depending on year-end evaluations and the profitability of the firm. Previous profit sharing distributions and bonuses have totalled up to $26,000, but this amount is not guaranteed nor is it a limit on how much in discretionary bonuses may be paid out to employees;
6. Health insurance, dental, and vision benefits;
7. Training in our practice areas, and if you are interested, training in how to build a client base.

The primary attributes we are looking for are whether the candidate:
a) Is organized and can complete assignments on time without frequent reminders about what needs to be completed;
b) Is a fast learner, but is also not afraid to ask questions if they need help;
c) Fits well with our existing team;
d) Is detail oriented; and
e) Is a good writer.

While we are primarily concerned with the skills above, a perfect candidate will also have experience:

a) Writing briefs;
b) Advocating for clients in court;
c) Experience with client or customer service;
d) Experience or interest in litigation, real estate law, business law, or trust and probate; and
e) Experience reviewing contracts and preparing legal documents.

Benefits of the position include the following:
1. NO billable hour requirements.
2. Unlimited vacation time.
3. Compensation with a base salary plus significant bonuses for production and case origination. Under our formula, 1,500 hours of billable work in a year would earn you $217,800 even if you did not originate any cases. If you also originated that work you would make $415,800.
4. Signup bonus of up to $8,000.00 depending on your experience and availability.
5. 401k plan where we contribute an extra 3% of your compensation (no matching required).
6. Bonuses and profit-sharing distributions to staff depending on year-end evaluations and the profitability of the firm (this is completely discretionary, but last year all eligible employees received a $17,000 profit sharing distribution in addition to thousands of dollars in bonuses given out during the year).

Under this formula 1,500 hours of billable work in a year would result in getting paid $207,900.00 even if the associate did not bring in any cases. If this dynamic is not appealing we are willing to discuss more traditional compensation models with candidates.

On top of the base salary, we provide bonuses and profit-sharing distributions to staff depending on year-end evaluations and the profitability of the firm (this is completely discretionary, but last year all eligible employees received a $17,000 profit sharing in addition to other bonuses given out during the year). We offer a 401k and contribute an extra 3% of your compensation to it (no matching required) once you are eligible to participate after one year of employment. We also provide health insurance coverage, with multiple options for you to select from.
