What happens before you get your settlement check?

Many clients assume that once a car wreck settlement is reached, the law firm simply writes them a check. However, attorneys have an obligation to verify that any outstanding reimbursement obligations are addressed before distributing settlement funds.

If a client used health insurance to cover medical bills following an accident, the health insurance provider may hold a contractual right of subrogation, a legal right to reimbursement from the settlement proceeds.

We’ve received the traffic homicide report from the June 2025 crash on Via de Luna involving our client, Scout Anderson, a motorcyclist who was struck and killed by Ann Killough. Ann Killough was sentenced to 15 years for vehicular homicide and 12 years for DUI manslaughter.

The traffic homicide report contains some shocking findings.

Investigators reviewed surveillance video from nearby businesses and used experts to estimate Killough was traveling 120–130 MPH before the crash and approximately 90 MPH at impact.

The investigation also included surveillance footage and interviews from the Sandshaker on Pensacola Beach, where Killough had been drinking before the crash. According to the report, she appeared at one point to be allegedly napping on the bar before leaving at closing time.

We’ll continue to provide updates as this case moves forward. Remember, our firm is only representing the family of the victim, and we are certain others will want to argue different facts. A judge or jury is the only proper arbiter of the facts.

Florida law doesn’t allow bars and restaurants to knowingly serve patrons they know to be habitually addicted to alcohol. Businesses that do are taking full advantage of a person’s addiction and endangering the public.

Four joint replacement patients at Ascension Saint Thomas Midtown in Nashville were reportedly harmed after receiving potassium phosphate instead of the anesthetic medication they were supposed to receive.

One patient was reportedly left paralyzed.

Medication safeguards exist for a reason. When something goes wrong, the consequences can be life changing.

We’re taking a closer look at what happened and the questions this medication error raises.

“They offered me $1,500. Do you think that’s fair?”

It’s a question asked far too often, just days after a car accident. But how can you know whether an offer is fair when you’re still trying to figure out what happened to your body?

The Sewing Box has been part of the Pensacola community for decades and has been a longtime customer and local business.

When someone in the community believes they’ve been wronged, standing on the sidelines isn’t an option. Even when an issue falls outside our firm’s area of practice, our goal is to help connect people with attorneys who understand the specific area of law involved.

Sometimes helping means taking a case. Other times, it means helping someone find the right lawyer to take it. The Sewing Box deserves the opportunity to have its case heard and to have someone in its corner who knows how to fight it.

This morning on CNN, Mr. and Mrs. Whitehurst joined Sara Sidner alongside Joe, to discuss the Navy’s decision to end The Sewing Box’s decades-long contract with the Blue Angels.

For nearly 40 years, the Pensacola business has custom-fitted Blue Angels uniforms right here in the community. Now, that contract has been awarded to an out-of-state company for nearly twice what the Navy had been paying The Sewing Box.

The Whitehursts are speaking out about what they believe led to the decision, the impact it could have on their business and employees, and why they believe this fight is far from over.

For 40 years, The Sewing Box has been making flight suits for the Blue Angels.

Mrs. Jellie Whitehurst has been there for all 40 of those years, helping design and develop the flight suits the team wears today. From redesigning pockets for their phones to making adjustments based on how the suits fit during training, the uniforms have been tailored to the Blue Angels’ needs over the years.

But this year, that 40-year relationship came to an unexpected end.

Mrs. Whitehurst says the usual bidding process happened differently this year. She never received the call letting her know the bidding was open, and when she eventually reached out to ask when she should come measure the finalists, she learned the contract had already been awarded to a company located in Virginia.

Now, questions remain about how the process unfolded, particularly because the design of the flight suits has been attributed to The Sewing Box. After four decades of making these uniforms, Mrs. Whitehurst is now exploring her options and seeking answers about what happened and where things go from here.
