September is National Preparedness Month—a good reminder that preparation matters for court-appointed guardians, too.

If you serve as guardian for a child or loved one with special needs, your responsibilities continue after the guardianship is established. Florida guardians may be required to file annual reports with the court regarding the individual’s care and, depending on the guardianship, their finances.

Staying organized throughout the year can make annual reporting much easier.

Consider keeping track of:

• Medical appointments, providers, and changes in care
• Living arrangements and support services
• Educational, vocational, or day-program information
• Significant changes in the individual’s needs or circumstances
• Financial records, receipts, statements, and expenses when applicable
• Important documents you may need when it is time to prepare the annual report

Waiting until an annual report is due to gather a year’s worth of information can create unnecessary stress. A simple system for maintaining records throughout the year can help guardians stay prepared and meet their ongoing responsibilities.
