Have you heard the commotion?! The May 7 deadline for REAL IDs is rapidly approaching and causing long lines at both TSA checkpoints and DMV locations.

Understanding REAL ID Requirements for Notary Services

As a notary public, ensuring proper identification is crucial. One key aspect is understanding and adhering to REAL ID requirements. The REAL ID Act, passed by Congress in 2005, establishes minimum security standards for state-issued driver's licenses and identification cards. These standards aim to prevent identity theft and enhance national security.

Why is REAL ID Important for Notaries?

When notarizing documents, verifying the identity of the signer is paramount. A REAL ID-compliant driver's license or identification card is a reliable form of identification. It assures the notary that the individual presenting the ID is indeed who they claim to be. According to the "Identity Verification Form" there is a note that states "Applicant's photo ID must meet the federal government's Real ID requirements. See www.dhs.gov/real-id."
