There is a telephone scam being conducted involving the IRS. The call will tell you you have over due taxes and that a warrant will be issued for your arrest. The IRS will never call you about an over due tax issue or send you an email, everything is done by correspondence. Please do not fall for this scam.

Please be careful, If you are a w-2 taxpayer and your preparer deducts your cell phone and mileage, these expenses are not usually deductible unless required by your employer and are an itemized deduction. if your preparer deducts them on a Sch C (self Employment) this is tax fraud. If you are audited and the IRS suspects fraud, they are not limited to the 3 year statute of limitation. Also, as a preparer I am required by due diligence to make sure that the taxpayer actually has a business as evidenced by an Occupational license.

So I just read where a judge in Virginia says the IRS doesn't have the authority to implement its regulations on preparers. This means that just about anyone can prepare a tax return without the proper training. Please be careful who you go to, make sure they are properly qualified. Make sure that they take tax preparation seriously and don't do it as a hobby or a way to make some quick money. Most reputable tax preparers are open year round and proudly display their credentials. Look for either an Enrolled agent or a CPA.
