🎓 COLLEGE PARENTS: There’s one more thing for the packing list.

And it might be more important than the mini fridge.

Your child turns 18 and suddenly, in the eyes of the law, they’re an adult.

That means if your 18-year-old is away at college and something happens that leaves them unable to handle their own medical or financial decisions, Mom and Dad don’t automatically have the same authority they did when their child was 17.

That’s where Powers of Attorney come in.

A Health Care Power of Attorney allows your student to name someone they trust to make medical decisions for them if they can’t make those decisions themselves.

A Durable Power of Attorney allows them to name someone to help handle financial and legal matters when needed.

And yes, they can name Mom and Dad. 😉
They just have to actually do it. Because sending them off with sheets, snacks, a laptop, and 47 things from Target is great…

But making sure you can step in when they truly need you?
That belongs on the college checklist too. ❤️

⚖️ Happy National Paralegal Day! ⚖️

Today we’re celebrating Christie—the person who keeps cases moving, deadlines organized, documents in order, clients updated, and the rest of us from completely losing our minds!!

A great paralegal is part investigator, part problem-solver, part mind-reader, and part miracle worker—and we are incredibly lucky to have one of the best!

Thank you, Christie, for everything you do for Island Law and our clients. We truly could not do it without you! 💙🌴

New school year, same reminder:
If you’ve been meaning to get your will, trust, power of attorney, or healthcare documents in place… consider this your sign. Even the girls are giving the “you still haven’t done that?” look. 👀

Let’s get it checked off the list.

Today is a reminder to rise gloriously, gratefully, and gleefully, and to begin the week with a positive outlook.

Life will always bring a few bumps in the road, but our attitude can make all the difference in how we move through them. Every day is a gift, every challenge is temporary, and sometimes a fresh start begins with simply deciding to get back up and keep going.

Here’s to starting this Monday with gratitude, optimism, and a smile. 💛

Upsy Daisy—it’s a brand-new day!

🍨 Sunday Legal Scoop: A common misconception is that having a Will keeps your estate out of probate.

A Will tells the Probate Court who should receive your property, who should administer your estate, and how you want certain matters handled, but the Will generally must still be submitted to probate.

Assets with properly designated beneficiaries, jointly owned property, and assets titled in a trust may pass outside probate. The right estate plan depends on your assets, family, and goals.

Planning ahead can make the process much easier for the people you love.
