When an elder financial abuse restraining order was filed against our client, a longtime friend and helper of the petitioners, based on a personal loan, Attorney Counts showed the loan was voluntary, fully repaid, and unsupported by any evidence of abuse, intimidation, or harassment. After hearing our clients testimony and argument, the court dismissed the petition in full, terminated the temporary restraining order, and entered no restraining order—resulting in a complete defense victory on the merits.

The plaintiff hired our client to pick up and store a cosmetic shipment valued at $500,000, then directed our client to release the cargo to an unaffiliated driver. Our client followed standard protocols by documenting the driver and vehicle and obtaining signed delivery acknowledgments before releasing the freight. Weeks later, the plaintiff alleged the shipment was missing and sued our client for negligence and theft. Attorney Counts and team traced the shipment from pickup through final release and established that our client bore no liability. As a result, the plaintiff dismissed the case with prejudice, and both parties agreed to walk away.

In a business debt negotiation matter, our client was sued for $53,000 in alleged unpaid workers’ compensation insurance premiums. Attorney Counts challenged the audit underlying the claim, uncovering incorrect payroll classifications and improper base rates.
After correcting the errors, the revised audit showed our client owed $0, and the $53,000 lawsuit was dismissed. Strategic advocacy and close attention to detail led to a complete resolution with no payment required.

What should have reflected the children’s existing living arrangement instead required court intervention. Since the parties’ separation, all five children had primarily resided with our client, the Father, while the Mother exercised only limited daytime visitation due to housing that could not legally accommodate overnight stays.

Despite the Mother seeking a significant increase in custodial time and financial support, the court ruled in favor of the Father. Based on a well-documented caregiving history, accurate income disclosures, and the children’s expressed preferences, Attorney Counts successfully advocated on the Father’s behalf, securing custody, visitation, support, and attorney-fee orders that closely mirrored our proposed outcome. The result prioritized stability, fairness, and the children’s best interests while bringing clarity and structure to a complex family matter.

What should have been a simple return of borrowed property was wrongly turned into restraining-order filing. With clear video evidence in our client’s favor, no police action, and no legal basis for the order, Attorney Counts successfully advocated for our client—resulting in the judge dismissing the case due to clear procedural defects. Our client hired a home inspector to perform a residential property inspection prior to purchasing their home. However, the inspector failed to disclose significant defects — which resulted in our client facing financial damages after closing due to unexpected repairs.
After multiple rounds of negotiations, Attorney Counts secured a settlement from the inspector to resolve the matter.

Our Story

Attorney Counts is a lawyer and founder of Counts Law Firm. He was born in Los Angeles to a mother of African-American ancestry, and a Persian father. He was raised in his grandparents home in View Park (Los Angeles). His maternal grandmother, a real estate agent/investor, group home owner/administrator, and registered nurse, instilled entrepreneurial values. His maternal grandfather, a college professor/chemist, achieved despite discrimination, and was his father-figure. His father was an architect in a family hotel business. He is the only child of his optimistic mother, who named "to believe". He paid for college and law school at Loyola through grants, workstudy, and student loans. To unite students for change, he was president of the Student Union, founder of the fraternity Brothers of Consciousness, and studied abroad in West Africa. He wrote for Loyola Law Review, won Moot Court, and clerked for the NAACP.

He was sworn in as a member of the State Bar of California in 2004 over 15 years ago. He founded Counts Law Firm PC in 2009 and has a full staff of research attorneys, paralegals, and assistants to provide high-end, full-service, legal representation to his clients. Counts Law Firm is based in Pasadena California, and represents individuals, families, and small businesses in contract negotiation, contract litigation, collections, debt negotiation, family law, and other matters throughout Los Angeles County and beyond.
