I woke up to the glorious sight of my youngest daughter standing by my bed. Her outstretched hands held a mug of hot, strong coffee. “Happy Mother’s Day, Mom,” she said. “I was thinking, this must be a really hard day for birth mothers.” “Yes,” I offered in agreement. “It’s complicated.”

Social media is fraught territory for us during this weekend each year. As we celebrate motherhood in all its different forms, we are acutely aware of the loss this day represents for so many women we love.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the amazing first mothers we’ve had the privilege of knowing over the past 18 years. Today, we celebrate you for your willingness to embrace the joyful, painful, complicated reality of what it means to be a birth mom.

xoxo, Celeste

A very good word from our friends at Darling Magazine...
“Healing doesn’t come casually. Time certainly does some stitching, but the deeper cuts require much more work. Whether we’ve been hurt by someone or have suffered from trauma, refusing to process can keep us from wholeness…”
. . .
Don’t let trauma have the final say. Don’t let grief be your only companion. Let healing seep in as you take time to process your hurt whether it be with a counselor, a support group or a close friend. Be honest with your struggles so that you can grow in your strengths. The road to healing isn’t easy, but you are worth the fight. @ Los Angeles, California

“Words are powerful. Some of these were said by well-meaning friends and others from complete strangers. Many times I have reacted out of defense mode and my emotions because let’s be real when these comments are made they target so much more than my heart; they target part of my identity…”

“Sacrificial Love. Adoption is stone-cold sacrifice. It is the definition of love in action. My Birth Mother's act of giving me life, placing me in the arms of my parents and then walking out of that hospital as she struggled with each step, epitomizes maternal love. I do understand that this is just my story. I know that adoption impacts people in a myriad of ways. Regardless, this is my story…”

Sharing this beautiful story in honor of National Adoption Month via @adoptmatch | ⠀
[[ Adoption as a #choice ]] “It’s hard for me when others assume I chose adoption because it was my only option, when in fact, it wasn’t. I was more than capable of raising her. I actually even longed to raise her with everything that was within me. But after thorough research and truly picturing my life considering my three options, I ultimately chose adoption. I chose adoption beyond a reason that I can truly put into words…but honestly I think that’s okay. I knew she would be safe. I knew she would have a home that included a mother and father who are together- I couldn’t be both for her. I knew she would be loved as much as I love her. I chose adoption; no one chose it for me. I didn’t choose adoption because of lack of education, instability, substance abuse, or because I was a pregnant teen without support. I chose adoption because after much counseling and education, I knew without a doubt that it was the best option for my baby girl at the time. I now live a new type of life as a birth mother: it is certainly not the same as it was before pregnancy nor is it easy by any means. I am still grieving the loss of her everyday and she will always have a piece of my heart. It’s the hardest thing I have and will continue to go through, but I will say there is hope and the healing has already begun. I have a beautiful relationship with her and the adoptive family and they have become like an extended family of my own. I feel empowered knowing that adoption was an informed choice that I made.” #adoptionisachoice #birthmomstrong⠀

New blog post ✨ The domestic adoption industry has changed significantly in the last twenty, even ten, years. What once was shrouded in a culture of shame is now turning into a culture of community, openness, and support. Conversations about the good and bad of adoption are happening and we're hopeful that the adoption industry will continue to change for the good through education and transparency. Today on our blog we have a story about the changing industry and how the power of conversation can help facilitate that change
