California's top court makes it more difficult for employers to classify workers as independent contractors

My friend, and kababayan, Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye authored an important opinion regarding the employee/independent contractor distinction in California. It's harder to claim that your personnel are ICs.

Read the full opinion here:

http://www.courts.ca.gov/opinions/documents/S222732.PDF

The California Supreme Court decided unanimously Monday that employers may classify workers as independent contractors only if they operate their own business, a ruling that could have implications for the growing gig economy.

Attorney Application for Financial Support From the TIME’S UP Legal Defense Fund - NWLC

The criteria TU lists for funding priorities are important and includes harassment against "an individual employed in low-wage work...because of the vulnerability to harassment in such occupations, the obstacles individuals in low-wage jobs face in finding legal representation, and the harm harassment in such occupations disproportionately imposes on women of color and immigrant women."

Let's go!!!!

The TIME’S UP Legal Defense Fund, which is housed at and administered by the National Women’s Law Center, connects those who experience sexual harassment (including sexual assault) or related retaliation in the workplace or in trying to advance their careers with legal assistance. For a group of...

PASADENA, CALIFORNIA — January 6, 2018 — The Los Angeles legal community turned out in force to pay their respects to the Honorable Beverly Reid O’Connell, United States District Court Judge. She was a respected jurist and even more beloved person. An alumna of UCLA, and avid fan of Bruins football, Judge O’Connell was well known for her pranks against her judicial colleagues from “the other school.” Judge O’Connell presided over the firm's Landmark Event Staffing case against Contemporary Services Corporation until June 2017. Judge O’Connell suffered an aneurysm during an event where she was counseling those who aspired to become Federal judges. She passed away on October 8, 2017.
