I spend plenty of time raising objections. On October 24, I’m inviting you to help raise spirits and support our community.

Join us for Pennies for Pennyville’s Spirits of Park Ridge at Ryan-Parke Funeral Home. Yes, cocktails at a funeral home. We’re putting the “fun” in funeral, and you don’t even need a referral to get in.

Enjoy Prohibition-themed cocktails or wines from the Caymus family, light bites, and exclusive raffles while supporting the Maine Township Food Pantry.

The pantry is working toward a new home on Milwaukee Avenue to better meet our neighbors’ needs. That means this evening has a purpose beyond what’s in your glass: helping local families put food on the table.

Through Pennies for Pennyville, I’m proud to help bring people together to do good right here in our community. I’d love to see clients, colleagues, friends, and neighbors join us for this one.

The downside of working with a great lender while helping home buyers? When the closing wraps up in under 30 minutes, I’m left with the three hour gap I built in before my next closing.🤣

It’s a pleasure to be presenting today at the Illinois Association of County Engineers’ 112th Fall Conference on Illinois Court Cases Involving County Highway Departments. I never turn down a chance to talk about the Illinois Tort Immunity Act.

I also take a little pride in my out of office replies, so today’s came with a preview of the talk incorporating Section 2-201, ministerial acts, and a reminder that applause for ending on time is entirely voluntary.

Would you like a sneak peek at a new book exploring the Illinois court decisions that have shaped engineering, land surveying, highways, property boundaries, drainage, and public infrastructure?

Dale Rasmussen and I are preparing Engineering, Surveying and the Courts: Landmark Illinois Cases, for submission to publishers, and we would welcome a few experienced professionals to serve as advance subject matter reviewers.

We are especially interested in hearing from:

• Professional engineers and land surveyors
• Attorneys practicing in property, boundary, municipal, or local-government law
• County engineers, highway officials, and public works professionals
• Professors and other specialists in these fields

Reviewers will receive an advance look at selected portions of the manuscript and an opportunity to help strengthen this distinctive interdisciplinary work. We are looking for thoughtful, practical feedback, not a line by line edit.

New “Ready for the Defense” column: “Cloudy with a Chance of Mandamus.”

This month I look at recent Illinois appellate decisions involving commercial solar facilities, special use permits, the limits of local government discretion, and when mandamus may, or may not, be available to force approval.

The cases don’t exactly see the issue the same way, which makes things particularly interesting for counties and other local governments trying to navigate Illinois’ relatively new solar-siting laws.
