Would you like a sneak peek at a new book exploring the Illinois court decisions that have shaped engineering, land surveying, highways, property boundaries, drainage, and public infrastructure?

Dale Rasmussen and I are preparing Engineering, Surveying and the Courts: Landmark Illinois Cases, for submission to publishers, and we would welcome a few experienced professionals to serve as advance subject matter reviewers.

We are especially interested in hearing from:

• Professional engineers and land surveyors
• Attorneys practicing in property, boundary, municipal, or local-government law
• County engineers, highway officials, and public works professionals
• Professors and other specialists in these fields

Reviewers will receive an advance look at selected portions of the manuscript and an opportunity to help strengthen this distinctive interdisciplinary work. We are looking for thoughtful, practical feedback, not a line by line edit.

New “Ready for the Defense” column: “Cloudy with a Chance of Mandamus.”

This month I look at recent Illinois appellate decisions involving commercial solar facilities, special use permits, the limits of local government discretion, and when mandamus may, or may not, be available to force approval.

The cases don’t exactly see the issue the same way, which makes things particularly interesting for counties and other local governments trying to navigate Illinois’ relatively new solar-siting laws.

I’m not sure everyone is as weirdly interested as I am in the recent wave of mass-filing FOIA lawsuits against local public bodies…

Illinois townships and public entities understand that transparency is part of public service. The Freedom of Information Act exists for an important reason. Still getting organized for what’s shaping up to be a hectic week, but I wanted to take a moment to say how great it was to see our community come together for Park Ridge Market after Dark.

The turnout was incredible, and nights like that don’t happen by accident. They take a lot of volunteers putting in a lot of time, energy, and effort behind the scenes to make everything run smoothly.

Thank you to everyone who helped plan, organize, volunteer, sponsor, support, and show up. Events like this are a great reminder of what makes our community so special.
